Los Serranos, Chino Hills, California

Los Serranos is a large unincorporated neighborhood within the east-central end of Chino Hills city limits, near the Chino Valley Freeway (SR 71). The U.S. Census reported Los Serranos as a separate place in the 1990 Census until it was incorporated into the city of Chino Hills on December 1, 1991. Los Serranos is located in western San Bernardino County, California.

Los Serranos loosely means "The Hills" in Spanish. Various concepts of Translation of Serrano meaning 'highlanders', 'monntaineer', or men of the hills. There is also the Serrano Tribe of California named by the Missionaries. In some dialects a Serrano can refer to an Old man of the Hills. Of course there is the Serrano Pepper.

The community is home of the Los Serranos Golf and Country Club.

Los Serranos is a neighborhood within the city of Chino Hills. It is subdivided into two sections known locally as "Upper" and "Lower" Los Serranos. The Demarcation between the two areas is the Los Serranos Golf and Country Club. North of the golf course is considered "Lower" Los Serranos due to its lower elevation, whereas South of the Golf Course is "upper" Los Serranos due to its higher elevation. Houses along the southern rim of the Golf Course which dominates the neighborhood have an elevated view which allows a panoramic view of the Chino Valley. Lower Los Serranos is defined by Birdfarm Road which runs roughly Parallel to HWY 71 along the North of the Golf Course. Upper Los Serranos is surrounded by Country Club Drive which follows the Southern boundary of the Golf course in a U shape. The Western edge of Los Serranos borders Pipeline Ave which runs South to North into Chino. Locally some older residents of Los Serranos referred to its two sections as Upper and Lower Dogpatch. A third community within Los Serranos is the retirement mobile home park area which surrounds Lake Los Serranos.

Los Serranos is predominantly residential. Its original housing supported the staff and guests at The Los Serranos Golf and Country Club prior to the 1950s. Very few businesses have persisted in the area. There is the decades old Descanso Market on Descanso street which is the sole surviving business in Upper Los Serranos which is the areas only Post Office center. One block away there was a Fast Food Hambuger joint that closed down in the 60s/70s and is now the site of two houses. Next to the Market is the local voting location. There are two churches in Upper Los Serranos; one focusing on local Asian population and one, the former American Legion post, predominantly appeals to the local Hispanics living in the area. In Lower Los Serranos there is one church. The Los Serranos Golf and Country Club is the predominate business in Lower Los Serranos which still provides some jobs to local residents.

There are 2 schools located within Los Serranos. Los Serranos Elementary is located on the west end of Los Serranos on Pipeline Ave. Los Serranos Elementary School is "technically" located in the Chino Hills community of Glenmead but as it faces the Los Serranos area and typically serves students from Los Serranos it has locally been considered part of Los Serranos. A more recent school is Chaparral Elementary, located on the east end of Los Serranos, opened in August, 2006. Both schools in Los Serranos are part of the Chino Valley Unified School District.
