Los Molinos is a census-designated place (CDP) in Tehama County, California, United States. The population was 1,952 at the 2000 census.

Los Molinos is located at 40°1′28″N, 122°5′58″W (40.024439, -122.099442)[1].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 2.3 square miles (5.9 km²), of which, 2.2 square miles (5.8 km²) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km²) of it (0.88%) is water.

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 1,952 people, 734 households, and 474 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 869.1 people per square mile (335.0/km²). There were 836 housing units at an average density of 372.2/sq mi (143.5/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 86.07% White, 0.31% African American, 1.69% Native American, 0.46% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 8.15% from other races, and 3.28% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 23.82% of the population.

There were 734 households out of which 30.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.3% were married couples living together, 12.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.3% were non-families. 31.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.61 and the average family size was 3.28.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 28.8% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 25.1% from 25 to 44, 21.1% from 45 to 64, and 16.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 89.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.4 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $26,691, and the median income for a family was $30,769. Males had a median income of $31,458 versus $20,769 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $12,107. About 18.0% of families and 18.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 25.0% of those under age 18 and 9.4% of those age 65 or over.

In the state legislature Los Molinos is located in the 4th Senate District, represented by Republican Sam Aanestad, and in the 2nd Assembly District, represented by Republican Doug LaMalfa. Federally, Los Molinos is located in California's 2nd congressional district, which has a Cook PVI of R +13[3] and is represented by Republican Wally Herger.

[edit] Famous Residents

Actor Leo Gorcey, one of the busiest actors in the United States between 1937 and 1957, lived with his family on the Brandy Lee Ranch in Los Molinos for many years. Leo Gorcey died from liver failure on June 2, 1969 at the age of 51, one day before his 52nd birthday. He is buried at Molinos Cemetery in Los Molinos. In 2003, Leo Gorcey, Jr., who also lived for a time in Los Molinos, published his own book about his father, entitled Me and the Dead End Kid.
