[edit] History

LASC was established in 1967, two years after the Watts riots, in response to one of the complaints of both officials and citizens--that not enough was being done to educate the area's mostly African-American population, which was terribly hurt by the civil unrest that scarred the area. A plot of land on Western Avenue and Imperial Highway was selected for the campus.

Today, the enrollment and population is divided almost evenly between African Americans and Hispanics.
