[edit] Sackville's Name & Title

Sackville is generally referred to as Lord John Philip Sackville to distinguish him from his famous son John Frederick Sackville, 3rd Duke of Dorset. --BlackJack | talk page 14:19, 5 August 2006 (UTC)

As his son was never any form of "Lord John Sackville", I fail to see what sense this makes. Proteus (Talk) 15:54, 5 August 2006 (UTC)
Easy enough mistake to make - after all, he was noble, and you need to be pretty well informed with British nobility to realise Dukes aren't called Lords (at least I didn't know about it.) What we've got is:
  1. John Philip, mostly known as Lord John when he lived, as he was son of Lionel, 1st Duke of Dorset, but was not the heir. Also according to sources User_talk:BlackJack#Lord_John_Sackville, died in December 1765.
  2. J.P. was the father of John Frederick, who had no title until his uncle Charles, 2nd Duke of Dorset (two year's John Philip's senior) died in 1769 and left the title to John Frederick.
I'll also note that the one reference in the Wisden archives [1] refers to John Sackville, without Philip. So I think some references to books (page numbers) are required to suggest John Philip is the most common form of the name. There should be disambiguation both ways, though (a link from here to the third Duke, and vice versa), because this is fiercely complicated stuff! Sam Vimes | Address me 12:13, 19 August 2006 (UTC)
