[edit] History
It is one of many Loreto schools distributed over the world. The school was founded in 1875 by the Loreto Sisters as their first foundation in Australia. Since then it has become one of seven sister schools located in all Australian state capitals. Loreto College is the oldest school in Ballarat, Victoria. The school has many historical buildings and much heritage that remains present to this day.
From 1978 -2006 Loreto College, Ballarat was on two sites. The Years 7 and 8 students at the smaller Dawson Street site which provided a bridge from primary school into a secondary school of approximately 800 students. The Sturt Street site, once known as Mary's Mount, was home to students in Years 9 to 12.
Loreto College, Ballarat however is changing its operations, moving the Dawson Street site onto the historical Sturt Street site, combining all year levels from 7-12 on the one site. The Dawson Street site closed in 2006. The new building at the Sturt Street Campus for the Year Sevens and Eights is known as the Mary Ward Centre. The Dawson Street Campus was sold and is currently being used by the Ballarat High School Year Nines.
[edit] Houses
There are four houses at Loreto College, named Barry, Mornane, Mulhall and Ward. The colours of the houses differ from school to school but at Loreto College Ballarat, Barry is red, Mornane is gold, Mulhall is green and Ward is blue. The houses are named in honour of great patrons of the school. Barry is named after Mother Gonzaga Barry, who led the nuns from Ireland to Australia; Mornane is named after Mother Stanislaus Mornane, who was one of the first students at the school to become a nun; Mulhall is named for Mother Stanislaus Mulhall and Ward is named for Mary Ward, the leader of the IBVM, Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary, who died in 1645.
