Talk:Lonsdale College
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Lonsdale College is named after the Lune Valley ('Lonsdale'), not the town of Kirkby Lonsdale, which happens to be named after the same valley. This has been verified with absolute certainty by consulting:
- Lonsdale College itself (contacted by e-mail).
- Dr. Mike Winstanley, Senior Lecturer in History and supervisor of the project which generated the 'University History' section of the University website (asked in person).
As a result of this exercise, the error on the Lonsdale entry in the University History website has been corrected - it now clearly states that the College is not named after the town.
Please do not make further amendments to this point of the Wikipedia entry without consulting these sources! Thanks.
Please also see my general point about the 'University History' site on my own 'Talk' page. --Ministry 16:02, 19 October 2005 (UTC)
The earlier, anonymous comment that Lonsdale is named after the main valley of the area, and that Bowland is named after the main range of hills, seems likely, but I cannot confirm it, so haven't reinstated it on the page. --Ministry 16:02, 19 October 2005 (UTC)
