[edit] Origin of Name

Does anyone know the story of the unusual name of this hamlet? Richerman (talk) 12:46, 8 February 2008 (UTC)

Having grown up in St Austell I have often wondered - and now have just found this [1] which is at least a start. DuncanHill (talk) 12:51, 8 February 2008 (UTC)
Thanks Duncan. I didn't really follow the first answer too well as it talks about apprentices but gives no reason why it should be London. The second one sounds feasible though. I was trying to put on the coordinates but couldn't work out exactly where it was on google earth. Any chance of you doing it as you're from the area? Richerman (talk) 15:07, 8 February 2008 (UTC)
I'm a bit rubbish with the coordinates templates! I'll see if I can get a grid ref if that helps. DuncanHill (talk) 15:10, 8 February 2008 (UTC)
It's in grid square SX0050. DuncanHill (talk) 15:15, 8 February 2008 (UTC)
And here is a link to Google Maps for it [2] —Preceding unsigned comment added by DuncanHill (talkcontribs) 15:21, 8 February 2008 (UTC)
Ok, thanks for that. The way I do it is to use google earth, hover over the right area and read off the coordinates at the bottom. Then there is one template that relates to those that I use and just copy the numbers in. It took me ages to work out how to do it but I eventually found one template that I could use. I should be able to find it now so when I've done it, if you have a look at the template it should be a bit clearer, hopefully. Richerman (talk) 15:36, 8 February 2008 (UTC)
Right, sorted. Good bit of teamwork there, thanks for your help. When I finally got there it was named on GE anyway - doh! Richerman (talk) 15:45, 8 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Historical Parish?

Where it says "in the historical parish of St Austell" should that be "historically in the parish of St Austell", or have I misunderstood the meaning of the sentence? Richerman (talk) 10:54, 11 February 2008 (UTC)

Ummm- good question! London Apprentice is (I think) in the unparished area of St Austell, and would have been (probably still is) in the ecclesiastical parish of St Austell. I'll do some digging to see what I can find. DuncanHill (talk) 11:09, 11 February 2008 (UTC)
Thanks Duncan Richerman (talk) 11:12, 11 February 2008 (UTC)
OK, according to the Cornwall interactive mapping service ([3]) London Apprentice is in the St Austell unparished area, and from what I can make out at the Diocese of Truro website it's in the St Austell ecclesiastical parish - haven't worked out a way to cite these yet. DuncanHill (talk) 11:16, 11 February 2008 (UTC)
Are the templates at Template:Cite web any use? Richerman (talk) 11:48, 11 February 2008 (UTC)
The thing is, there is no way to link to the map output on the Cornwall interactive mapping service. For the ecclesiastical parish, I didn't find any specific reference - my result would be classed as synthesis for WP purposes. DuncanHill (talk) 11:54, 11 February 2008 (UTC)
Does this link work for you? [4]. DuncanHill (talk) 11:57, 11 February 2008 (UTC)
Ah, I see your problem now, it goes there but doesn't display the map Richerman (talk) 12:05, 11 February 2008 (UTC)
Could you link it to the main website with some instructions on what to click on from there? Richerman (talk) 12:14, 11 February 2008 (UTC)

Using the External link in the article for St Austell Parish I got to here and here I'm just not sure if after 1849 means up to the present day. Richerman (talk) 12:33, 11 February 2008 (UTC)
