Longshore Sailing School
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Longshore Sailing School (LSS), a sailing school with locations in Westport and Greenwich, Connecticut.
The private school was founded in 1959 by John Kantor, who continues to run it. (Kantor also designed the sailing school program at the Bitter End Yacht Club & Resort in the British Virgin Islands, ran it for many years and continues there as a consultant.)[1][2] The school is at the Longshore Club Park in Westport and the Old Greenwich Yacht Club in Greenwich. The school also rents small sailboats and kayaks at both locations.[3][4]
Longshore offers classes for both children and adults. The "Junior Program" for ages 9 through 16 offers one- and two-week courses during the summer:[3] Basic Sailing, Intermediate Sailing, Advanced Sailing, and Racing Techniques.[4] The Adult Program offers weekend courses, including classes for beginners, intermediate-level sailors and "advanced" sailors. Classes leading to "CT Safe Boating" certification are also offered.[3]
The school's staff includes U.S. Sailing Association certified instructors.[4] Sailing instructors at the school have come from England, Iceland, Sweden, Norway, Canada, Belgium, France, Dominica, Australia, and the Netherlands.[3]
Greenwich Community Sailing is a program of classes operated by Longshore Sailing School in association with the Old Greenwich Yacht Club at Greenwich Point, which previously ran its own classes. As of 2006, the Greenwich program was teaching almost 600 students a year.[4]
According to the school, it is "among the oldest and most renowned sailing programs in the country" and has earned "the country's most prestigious sail training awards".[5]
