Longforgan is a village in the parish of the Carse of Gowrie. It lies 5 miles (8 km) west of Dundee. It is north of Castle Huntly.

It was created a burgh of Barony in 1672 and developed in association with Castle Huntly to the south west.

[edit] Name

The name Longforgan comes from a Latin phrase meaning "land above the marsh", which comes from the village being situated on high ground compared to the lower ground of the surrounding fields towards the River Tay.

There are 10 areas in Longforgan:

[edit] Main St

Main St is the oldest part of the village. It contains the oldest cottages in the village and the bowling club, police station, post office, primary school, Coaching Inn, church and general store.

[edit] Patterson

Built in the 1970s to accommodate the village's growing population it is situated in the north of the village.

[edit] Dorward

Dorward Place was built in 1996 and is mostly sheltered housing and flats.

[edit] Westbank

Westbank was originally farms but was transformed into houses in around 2000.

[edit] Eastbank

Was built in the 1960s before Patterson.

[edit] Southbank

Southbank contains around 5 cottages and is situated close to the banks of the Tay.

[edit] Mary Findlay Drive

Built in the 2000s it is the largest modern housing estate in Longforgan with around 60 houses and its own park.

[edit] Worbey Place and McDonald Road

Built along with Mary Findlay Drive in the 2000s, Worbey and McDonald is situated next to the village park. It is a two phase project and the second phase is expected to start soon.

[edit] Rosamunde Plicher Drive

Named after the bestselling author, Rosamunde Plicher Drive is situated east of Westbank.

[edit] Village park

The Helen McGregor Park is situated in the east end of Longforgan. It includes tennis courts, a football pitch, climbing frames and swings, etc. The park may be moved to the Westbank farms in a few years.
