Longbenton is an incorporated town in North Tyneside, England. It is the site of Longbenton Metro station and is often referred to as a major centre for HM Revenue and Customs, though in fact their entire site of some 12,000 people is not in North Tyneside at all. This is a frequent confusion, because of the regular reference to the site as being called "Longbenton". The HMRC site is fully within the boundaries of the City of Newcastle upon Tyne with which North Tyneside shares a common boundary. The HMRC (HM Revenue & Customs) site is now called 'Benton Park View', Newcastle upon Tyne. However, before the site came under the remit of HMRC, it was referred to by Government as Newcastle Central Office, Longbenton DSS (Department of Social Security) and staff still refer to it as "Longbenton" and "The Ministry". Local bus services still show destination boards as "Longbenton DSS" although technically they should show "HMRC Benton Park View".
Longbenton is usually referred to as the site of Longbenton Community College, although it is technically in Benton.
Nearby places are Killingworth, Forest Hall, Four Lane Ends, West Moor, Heaton and South Gosforth, in Newcastle upon Tyne.
In Benton there is a high school, Longbenton Community College which is also a technology college, St Mary's Catholic Comprehensive School and three primary schools. The three primary schools are Goathland Primary School , Balliol Primary School and St Stephen's Primary School.
