[edit] Postal arrangements

The postcode district is part of the LONDON post town.[1] Sectors 8, 9 and 0 are in use.[1] There are no dependent localities used in the postcode district.[1] The numbered district was created in 1917 and was originally designated as the Lee postal district.[2] Before then it had been included in the SE postal district, with a post office under Lewisham.[3] There has been no significant recoding of the district from 1990 to 2007.[4] There are four Post Office branches in the district found on Burnt Ash Hill, Sibthorpe Road and two on Baring Road.[5]

[edit] Demography

The postcode district has a population of 25,361 in 11,395 residential properties and the greatest number (40.9%) of the properties are flats.[6] The population density is 52.6 people per square kilometre. The median age of residents is 36.[6]

[edit] Coverage

Most of the area covered is within the London Borough of Lewisham loosely covering two electoral wards, Lee and Grove Park which also include most of Chinbrook and parts of Hither Green. The northern part of SE12 covers some of the Blackheath ward. Approximately a fifth of SE12, the north east corner, is within the London Borough of Greenwich containing the Horn Park area of Eltham, part of the Middle Park and Sutcliffe ward.[7]

The postal area shares broadly the same boundaries as the ancient Lee parish, abolished in 1905. Although the parish extended further north covering more of Blackheath, and extended less to the east not covering Horn Park like the postal area does.[8]

The postcode district is a long, thin area running north to south following the main A2212 road, this road begins at Lee Green cross roads with the A20 and is called Burnt Ash Road, Burnt Ash Hill and Baring Road along its length within this postcode. This road has most of the postcode district's commercial users along it and connects the town centres of Lee and Grove Park. There are also commercial users around the A20 road as passes through the district on its way from Lewisham to Eltham.

The A205 South Circular road cuts through Burnt Ash Hill and bisects SE12 marking the official boundary between the electoral wards of Lee and Grove Park. The Quaggy River flows through Grove Park then marks some of the eastern border, with SE9. The railway line, South Eastern Main Line, north and south of Grove Park railway station, marks most of the southern and western boundary with the SE6 and BR1 postcode districts.
