[edit] History
The 96 commenced operation on 4 March 1959 in stage 1 of London Transport's "buses for trolleybuses" conversion scheme. It was a direct replacement for trolleybus route 696 and ran between Woolwich and Dartford via Plumstead, Welling and Bexleyheath. A supplementary daily route 195 between Woolwich and Eltham, also commenced at this time. This was the second time that a motorbus route had carried the route number 96.
Although a very stable route, the 96 was involved in an "area scheme", as the continual route change schemes in the early 1960s were known.
As from 8 May 1963, the 96 was extended at Woolwich to terminate at Victoria Way. The 195, which wasn't a successful route, was withdrawn at this time. One person operation came to the 96 as from 6 November 1971 and the route was extended to Charlton Station at the same time.
In August 2006 there was fire on a bus in Dartford.
