[edit] History
Route 607 is one of the few limited stop services in London, and was created in 1990 to act as an express service for route 207 between Shepherd's Bush Green & Uxbridge. The route started on 21 July 1990, using Metrobuses, from both Hanwell and Uxbridge Garages. By June 1991, the Hanwell allocation had been withdrawn and the route was converted to single deck operation in November, using a mixture of five Leyland Lynxs and six Leyland Nationals. The Leyland Lynxs were bought from the London Borough of Hillingdon who had bought these buses to run routes that connected Uxbridge and Ruislip stations with Harefield and Mount Vernon Hospitals, on the edge of the London Transport boundary. The buses were repainted into London Buses livery and route branded for the 607 Express. As the buses were not originally bought by London Buses they were not to London Transport specification and did not have a rear route blind, so the route number was painted on the rear of the bus.
The Lynxs were transferred within the Centrewest Group during October 1996, and route 607 was duly converted to double deck operation using fifteen (13 were needed for the route, with two spare) high specification Northern Counties Palatine 2 Volvo Olympians with high-back coach style seating and tinted glass windows. They received a red and white Uxbridge Buses livery separated with blue stripes, although were not route branded as the Leyland Lynx/Nationals has been.
Extra Volvos from Orpington made spare from the contract renewal of route 61 in May 2002 were sent, after refurbishment (repainting and reglazing, but they retained low-back bus seats), to Uxbridge to supplement route 607s Volvos. The Volvos were replaced in April 2005 and the route was converted to low floor using existing buses from the restructuring of route 207. Route 207 was split and the northern Acton to Uxbridge section, renumbered 427, retained Dennis Trident 2 10.5 m Plaxton Presidents (TNLs) while the more central Shepherds Bush to Hayes section gained new articulated Citaros. The surplus TNLs were transferred to route 607, in their existing condition, with no route branding although white on blue desintation blinds have been used throughout the 607s history to distinguish the route from regular stopping services.
