Route 417 was commenced in 1999 and was operated by Arriva London South at Norwood Garage using Leyland Olympians.
By 2003 Norwood Garage brought in some brand new DAF DB250/Alexander ALX400 low floor double deckers (DLA-class) which were mainly bought for routes 2 and 417.
