[edit] History

Route 283 was introduced as a new Monday - Saturday service linking Fulham Broadway and East Acton on 29 January 1983. It served a number of previously un-served roads in the Shepherds Bush area. Operation was by Daimler Fleetline (DMS-class) double deckers from Shepherds Bush Garage. In March 1984, brand new MCW Metrobuses (M-class) replaced the DMS's. In 1986 London Transport awarded the second batch of routes placed out to tender. The 283 passed to Scanbus. To operate the route they purchased brand new Scania single deck, dual door buses, painted white and blue. As was the norm in those days the contract was for 3 years, and the route was offered again in 1989. This time it was awarded to London United, with brand new single door Leyland Lynx.

In 1991 the section between Hammersmith and West Brompton was withdrawn, and replaced by route 190. At the same time the Lynx's were replaced by Dennis Darts, and a Sunday service was introduced for the first time.

In 1998 the route was extended again, this time across Hammersmith Bridge to Barnes Pond, and in 2000 diverted during opening hours to the new Barnes Wetland Centre. It is now one of the very few London Bus routes to have different routings at different times if the day.

In April 2002, new Low floor Dennis Dart SLFs replaced the earlier step entrance models.

The route has been operated by either Stamford Brook or Shepherds Bush Garages, and sometimes by both.
