[edit] History
Route 260 was introduced on 3 January 1962 to replace the former trolleybus route 660 which ran from Barnet Church and terminated at Willesden Junction via North Finchley, Finchley, Golders Green, Childs Hill, Cricklewood, Willesden and Halesden; it was also extended during Monday-Friday peak hours and Saturdays to Hammersmith (it was pretty much running the basis of the 263 and 266).
It was withdrawn between Barnet Church and New Barnet in 1969, although it was extended from Barnet Church on Sundays to Barnet Chesterfield Avenue.
The 260 was withdrawn between North Finchley and Barnet in 1978, with the section between Willesden Junction and Hammersmith being withdrawn in 1981. It was extended to Shepherd's Bush Green replacing the withdrawn section of the former route 255 in 1987. In 2003 it was withdrawn between Golders Green and North Finchley and covered by new route 460.
Before 260 was on a contract to Metroline, the 260 was operated by London Transport from 1962 to 1990 at the Cricklewood, Finchley, Stonebridge, Hendon and Willesden. Willesden gained the whole allocation of the 260 in 1981; the allocation was transferred to Brentford's Armchair in 1990, using both Leyland Olympians and Volvo Olympians. The 260 was moved back into Willesden bus garage on a contract to Metroline using Metrobuses, it was moved for brief time to Harlesden and the allocation moved back to Willesden and route 297 was moved to the East Perivale garage. For a short time Metrobuses and Leyland Olympians were used on route 260, it gained brand new Volvo B7TL 10m / Plaxton President (VP) typed double deckers in summer 2003.
