[edit] History

The 222 has a long but uneventful history, the current service on route 222 began on the 16 January 1971, although the route dates back much longer, being withdrawn for a period between November 1958 and January 1971. The 222 has always followed the same route between Uxbridge and Hounslow, being run from the route's terminus at Uxbridge Garage for many years until First lost the contract to run the route and from the 16 September 2000 it was transferred to London United to Hounslow Garage, which incidentally is at the other end of the route!

The 222 was one of five routes selected by London Transport for evaluation of the first low floor buses, capable of carrying wheelchairs, from March 1994 (the others were 101, 120, 144 and 186). All 68 buses ordered (12 destined for the 222) were fitted with Wright Pathfinder bodies, but the chassis were divided between Dennis and Scania, with the 222 being one of the routes to receive the LLW-class Dennis Lance SLFs. Although the trial proved successful, with the entire London Bus Network now being low floor, the vast majority of subsequent low-floor single-deck buses in London have been Darts and the 222 is no exception.
