[edit] History
Route 221 began in late 1961 to replace the former trolleybus services 521 and 621. Which ran from North Finchley to King's Cross (Sundays) and Farringdon Street (Mon-Sat/Sunday early journeys).
The 221 was extended Monday - Saturday from North Finchley to Edgware Station in 1966, via routes 125 and the former 240A. The stand was revised at Holborn, buses terminated at Holborn Circus instead of Farringdon Street in 1972.
It was withdrawn between Turnpike Lane Station & Holborn Circus in 1995.
Route 221, for a long time has been stationed at Wood Green, although Finchley had a part allocation from 1961 - early 1986 and Edgware in mid 1986.
Routemasters were used from 1961, it was converted to one person operation in 1973 and DMS and later Metrobuses (M) type double deckers where used.
When Wood Green gained the whole allocation in 1987, the Sunday service was converted to midibus operation in 1995. The Sunday service was converted back to double deck in summer of 1995.
The route was converted to low-floor in 1999, in the form of brand new DAF DB250LF 10.2m / Alexander ALX400; although all sorts of low-floor double-deckers from the Wood Green garage show up very frequently.
