[edit] History
A short route was formed on the 11 October 1997 in the form of route 189, running between Brent Cross Shopping Centre and Kilburn Park Station, partially replacing the withdrawn 16A (which ran from Brent Cross to Oxford Circus, via Marble Arch).
A few months later, on the 28 March 1998, the 189 was extended to Oxford Circus via Abbey Road and Baker Street to parallel the newly single decked 139, giving extra capacity on that section.
A night service (N189) was added on the 11 October 2002, although the route did not run between North Cricklewood Tilling Road and Brent Cross during late evenings.
During February 2003 the R-reg Plaxton Pointer Dennis Darts were gradually replaced with double-deck Dennis Trident Plaxton Presidents, in preparation for the Congestion Charging Scheme. A full night service was also added on the 1 February 2003 making this a 24 hour route.
