[edit] History
Route 144 is the renumbering of the former route 144A in 1994, which ran between Lower Edmonton and Muswell Hill via Alexandra Park, Hornsey, Turnpike Lane, Wood Green and Upper Edmonton.
The 144 was one of the many routes in London that year that gained low-floor Wright Pathfinder (SLW class) single-deckers. They didn't work well because the 144 was is a very busy route so in 1999 they were replaced by low-floor DAF DB250LF / Alexander ALX400 (DLA class) double deckers.

[edit] Previous route 144 in London
Until 1988 a route 144 ran between Ilford and Turnpike Lane (prior to 1982, also Muswell Hill). This was curtailed east of Edmonton and re-routed to Chingford, being renumbered 444 in 1991. The Muswell Hill to Turnpike Lane section formed the basis of the 144A (introduced 1982) which was renumbered to the present 144 in 1994.
