London 2012 Olympic youth ambassadors

There are 30 London 2012 Olympic youth ambassadors. During London's bid to the IOC to host the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic games, London's delegation was in the final phase of a secret initiative to help win the right to host the games.

[edit] The plan

The plan was to bring 30 London school children aged 11-16 to Singapore. This was to help show that London believes the future is children and also because London has such youthful diversity.

Each of the 5 candidate cities were allowed 100 seats in the presentation hall. These seats are normally allocated to the creme de la creme of the countries, i.e policitians or royalty. London decided that 30 of these highly prestigious seats would be occupied by normal, school children.

[edit] The roles and responsibilities

The youth ambassadors were revealed two days before the presentation during promotional media activities. The first media event was held at the British club, where British athletes train in Singapore. This saw the youth ambassadors playing sports with the other ambassadors. For example, some children played football with Sir Bobby Charlton, some played basketball with David Beckham, and others played tennis with Daley Thompson.

During the presentation to the IOC. When Seb Coe was giving his speech, he said "and in the audience..." to which the cameras went straight to the youth ambassadors who smiled and waved to the IOC.

The youth ambassadors were also present during the announcement ceremony and the after party that followed.

Nowadays, the ambassadors go to regular meetings with the London 2012 team to discuss the progress of the olympic deliverance and also further responsibilities for the ambassadors.

The ambassadors were present at the "One year on" celebrations in Trafalgar square. There is also a planned event in Canning Town on the 4th of June 2007.
