Can you please explain your statement? <<<Please the talk page before making edits which might be controversial. Wikipedia runs on consensus and please don't push POV. Thanks<<<<< —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ynyus75 (talkcontribs) 12:22, 12 November 2007 (UTC)

I don't know why people only see language groups in geography? E.g, for a tourist who wish to visit a geographical region what matters more is the geographic location than language, so that he/she could plan his trip accordingly. As an another example, consider, Seattle and Los Angeles in the United States, while Seattle is on the North side Los Angeles is on the South apart from both cities being on the west coast. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ynyus75 (talkcontribs) 12:47, 12 November 2007 (UTC)

--yny 15:51, 12 November 2007 (UTC)Thanks for your reply and suggestion on using talk, but the regions you mentioned viz. mid-west, middle east cannot be compared with East/West and North/South. Technically Texas may not belong to mid-west, but no one can deny that it belongs to the South. One does not need an official body to determine whether Maharashtra is to the South of India or not, mere common sense would tell that Maharashtra is on the South. We don't have to go back to the stone age and believe that the Earth is flat just because some strata of the people believe that its flat as opposed to the scientifically proven fact. If an object does not belong to the either North or East, then naturally it should belong to either West or South or both. --yny 15:51, 12 November 2007 (UTC)

<<<You wouldn't see a Marathi classifying him or her as a South Indian but a Tamil or a Telugu would. <<<

This is the mother of all ridiculous statements.--yny 16:08, 12 November 2007 (UTC) How can a Marathi speaking person classify himself/herself as South Indian or North Indians, as if there are two different countries like North India or South India? It is not language that determines one's citizenship. A Marathi, living in Mumbai would identify herself as Southern Indian or Western Indian by geographic position, and a Marathi living in New Delhi would identify herself as Northern Indian. --yny 15:59, 12 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Discrepancy in the definition

<<South India is a commonly used term used in India to refer to the southern portion of India or more properly, Southern India. <<

This statement is quintessence of tautology. What is so called "southern portion of India"? Doesn't this portion include Maharashtra? Do we need a written permssion to identify a Southern Indian State to be declared as a Southern Indian state?

The southern part of the Indian peninsula is a linguistic-cultural region of India that comprises the four states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu and the two Union Territories of Lakshadweep and Puducherry, whose inhabitants are collectively referred to as South Indians or more properly Southern Indians.

If "The southern part of the Indian peninsula" consists of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, then what does the Northern part of the Indian peninsula contain?

However, the geographical south of India includes all Indian territory below the 20th parallel.

My dear learned user! would you please elaborate the Indian territory that you just mentioned above. Oh, perhaps you might say the following paragraph elaborates the very same fact. So if I take that "This" in your subsequent paragraph would mean the "Indian territory that includes the geographical south", then why did you not listed the states that are part of that territory?

This region includes the entire Indian Peninsula, south of the Vindhya Range. The Narmada and Mahanadi rivers form the northern boundaries of the region, while the Arabian Sea, Indian Ocean and the Bay of Bengal surround the peninsula in the west, south and east respectively.

This is what precisely I meant by the Southern India with the inclusion of its constituent sates.

The southernmost point of the region (and of mainland India), is Kanyakumari. The geography of Southern India is diverse, encompassing two mountain ranges — the Western Ghats and Eastern Ghats and a plateau heartland. The Tungabhadra, Kaveri, Krishna and Godavari rivers are important non-perennial sources of water.

My dearest learned user! You mean to say the southern India encompasses Western Ghats and the Godavari, Krishna rivers, but not the inhabitants of those. e.g. River Godavari flows in the southern side of India, but a Marathi living by the banks of River Godavari would not live in southern India as (s)he does not identify himself/herself as southern India, but would certainly admit that the river on the bank of which is lives is part of southern India.--yny 17:01, 12 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] List of States in southern India

I really appreciate your compromise over this issue. But going by definition I don't see why States Maharashtra, Goa and Orissa were not listed in the list of southern Indian states. As a matter of fact, Bhuvaneshwar, the capital of Orissa, is the head-quarters of the South-Eastern Railyways, which indicates that Orissa is indeed a state of Southern India. Going by the same Latitude measure we can undeniably say that entire state of Maharashtra falls under the southern Indian territory. Now as far as types of definitions goes, one can always give definitions such as i) Dravidian India, 2) Non-Dravidian South India, 3) Pre-Independence South India 4) Post-Independence South India, 5) Socio-linguistic South India, 6) Cultural South India and, 7) Marathi's view of South India and so forth. --yny 23:23, 12 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Re:Nikkul

Yes, a lot of people have differences with Nikkul. I had to even block him from wikipedia some time back. He sees it as his mission to get stunning images to wikipedia. This is not bad per se, but they should have some encyclopedic content with a succinct caption, which he does not provide. You can report him to WP:ANI or create an RFC on him. =Nichalp «Talk»= 02:12, 17 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] SSP case

You created this case directly on the SSP page, which is incorrect, please follow the directions and create the sub page. RlevseTalk 13:53, 19 November 2007 (UTC)

It's still wrong. please follow instructions on that page under "To start a case report about suspected sockpuppetry:". RlevseTalk 18:14, 19 November 2007 (UTC)
OK, tks, but new cases go at the top, I moved it for you. RlevseTalk 22:54, 19 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Speedy deletion of Image:Lotuste,ple.gif

A tag has been placed on Image:Lotuste, ple.gif requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section I2 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an image page for a missing or corrupt image or an empty image description page for a Commons-hosted image.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines.
