[edit] Review

This section moved from main article due to POV: Musically it's a very eclectic bag. Opener "Another Day" kicks the album off in fine form with a taut & driving metal riff and soaring Maynard James Keenanesque vocals; a fantastic start but by track 2 there's the first of a myriad of twist and turns that punctuate the album, keeping it interesting without ever losing momentum. The track in question is "Salter's Duck", a brooding blast of Hip Hop with megaphone vocals and some vicious guitar leads that transcend the current, and somewhat restrictive, nu/rap metal formula. "Wait a Minute" is next up and is probably the closest thing to a single on the album, all anthemic choruses and loud-quiet-loud guitars. It seems Lodestar are determined never to sit still and every song has its own identity, you'll find heavy metal, rap, funk, blues, classic rock, and outright wierdery all present and correct here and strung together seamlessly by some exemplary musicianship. A special mention should go to album closer "Iliac Crest", which seeps out of the speakers on a loping bass riff and builds, with the aid of strings, drums and eventually buzz saw guitars into an absolute monster, that recalls Janes Addiction being molested by Trent Reznor while "Opiate" era Tool stand by and throw bricks at them. I can't help but think that in the current rock friendly climate Lodestar would fare far better than they did back in '96 when this was released, but at least they left us with this as a reminder of just how inspiring and pant wettingly exciting music can, and should, be.
