Hi:} On your Medina del Campo page, could you put the names of the buildings,, streets, people into Spanish please? I know that in Spain it is customary to "translate" proper names but this is not generally true in English. For example, Spanish newspapers write of la Reina Isabel II and el Principe Carlos, (which makes some English readers want to strangle the journalist!) whereas British newspapers put King Juan Carlos and Prince Felipe. Likewise we dont translate terms like Sierra Nevada, Costa del Sol, Sagrada Famila, Prado, Gran Via. I dont know if this is because we are so cosmopolitan or just lazy.

Expressions like Padilla Street or Sir XXX (for Don) sound very strange to the English ear, even jokey. Of course sometimes a translation is necessary (I suggest in brackets after the first mention), but use the Spanish name only thereafter. Sometimes English people even say "the Sierra Nevada Mountains" (!) but never Nevada Mountains or Snowy Mountains.

This is not a rule in English, just a convention. The excaptions are the relatively few places, names, in each country, which do have an established English translation dating back centuries (when we too used to anglicize everything "difficult", especially words including ll or ñ). The only ones in your article are, I think, Castile and (archaic) Ferdinand.

List of others: Seville, Navarre, Basque Country, Catalonia, Balearics, Canary Islands, Bay of Biscay (=Mar Cantabrico), Straits of Gibraltar, (King) Philip, Catherine of Aragon, the Pyrenees.

There are a few others, such as Corunna, Saragossa, Majorca, which are now archaic. Nowadays we use the Spanish version. Andalusia is in the process of changing now (with so many Engliah people there now its gradually becoming Andalucia).

But the general rule is, if in doubt, leave it as in Spanish. Jameswilson 00:59, 19 January 2006 (UTC)

I've checked the grammar (only 8 minor mistakes - is/it's, his/its, omit article or not, etc) and improved the style here and there. Is there some text missing in the third paragraph?

Hi. As you see, I have been translating into English your Spanish language article, es:Trabancos. I saw your recent edits and am glad you found the article and made some corrections. If I had know you were a member of this language Wikipedia, I would have dropped by before now. My ability in Spanish is somewhat primitive, similar to your ability in English (as you've indicated on your userpage). I would love to get that article into good form, and I think we will need a third person, with more cross-language fluency than either of us, to translate certain sections. But your informational knowledge is critical to making sure the article's translation does not contain factual errors. Feel free to reply in Spanish. Espero que te encuentres bien. No hagas caso de las chorradas que dice alguno sobre tí. Somos muchos los que te admiramos profundamente. Respecto de mi marcha, lo debía dejar, los artículos que estaba escribiendo se estaban apoderardo de mi mente a todas horas y lo que más me interesaba era wikipedia y lo demás pasaba a un segundo plano. Yo llevaba tiempo preocupado por tu ausencia y lo que leí sobre tí en el café me inflamó. Pero me hubiese tenido que ir de todas formas. Por tanto encima de lo que te estan haciendo pasar no te sientas culpable de mi marcha, que en estos momentos es lo mejor que me puede pasar y lo que necesito. Nada, no me hagas mucho caso, a veces escribo mensajes que ni yo mismo luego puedo "descifrar", lo que quería decir es que discusiones tenemos todos, pero como he comentado en alguna otra ocasión, no sé, desde mi punto de vista lo importante (en este caso) es el proyecto, no las personas (excepcionalmente, porque para todo lo demás mi filosofía es la contraria). Las cosas tienen la importancia que queramos darle, en el tiempo que llevo colaborando en los proyectos wiki no he sufrido aun ni un solo bloqueo. Por cierto, ya que vas a ahorrar energías "descansando" de la wiki.es, podrías "descargar" energías en eltaller : )

Greeting! I am sorry to inform you that this map of yours is totally wrong concerning the Byzantine borders in the Balkans. In the beginning of the 9th century the First Bulgarian Empire existed there and was at that time stronger than the Byzantine Empire (see Krum of Bulgaria, battle of Pliska, battle of Versinikia). I would like to ask you to correct it adding the Bulgarian Empire which was a powerful factor at exactly that time. See this map for Bulgaria's borders.
