[edit] Racism?

Adding an article that suggests racism within LocoRoco. Ashton Brood 21:54, 28 June 2006 (UTC)

A blog isn't a proper article - saying LocoRoco is racist is like saying Grand Theft Auto 3 is racist because it displays all Italians as gangstars +Falcon9x5 08:28, 29 June 2006 (UTC)
Compare this [1] and that [2]. I propose simply adding a controversy section, as it does include the stereotypes of blackface and eating watermelon.Infinitys 7th
The second version is a photoshopped image - see the original here (no Sony logo, Mature - with and R, etc - badly photoshopped). It's people making scandal where there is none. No controversy. +Falcon9x5 16:21, 29 June 2006 (UTC)
When I said photoshopped first, I meant cut. And I should point out there are no watermelons anywhere in the game. +Falcon9x5 17:34, 29 June 2006 (UTC)
[3] I have to wonder why it was reported then. . . Infinitys 7th 23:23, 29 June 2006 (UTC)
They don't check their facts, and anyway, the entire report was based around a blog. LocoRoco is one of the happiest, funnest games I've played in a long, long time. Look at the original image again then look at this and this. It's obvious the image was created to further the guys argument, which actually servers to defeat it. No racism. +Falcon9x5 07:17, 30 June 2006 (UTC)

But some of the enemies in the game DO look like blackface, mainly the Moja Corps, the main antagonist of the LocoRocos. I'm not saying the makers are racist, but it does bring up some misconceptions when Japanese developers bring their games worldwide. Keep in mind if Sony decides to change things. Let's remember Mr. Popo and Jynx, shall we?

Thenagain, if you do research, there are black LocoRocos in the full version of the game, along with 5 other colours including the standard yellow. And not all the enemies are black, the owl for instance, is green. Architect2k 21:53, 2 July 2006 (UTC)

There were similar blackface looking enemies in either Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door or Mario and Luigi, I can't remember. RPGamer made fun of it cause there was like a whole room of them and Mario was stomping them. I think these things are like the Makurokurokuroski? literally Blacky Blacky Black from Totoro and Spirited Away which were Soot spirits. Novaterata 05:03, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

FANBOYS!!!

Added section for the controversy, as I would concider it notable, especially in light of the creator issuing an appology. I have cited three sources in my piece, hopefully showing how widespread the issue was. If anone has a logical reason why they think the section sould be removed, then feel free to debate it here. Devilmaycare (talk) 08:11, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

First off, I don't think Spong is a good source of information since they rarely cite sources of their information. Second off, all of this is coming from one source, mainly this guy's blog. Third, here is Tsutomu Kouno's quote from the GI.biz article, "I have been asked this question many times by American [journalists]. I never cared about that. I was surprised - I was just very ignorant of the fact that it was becoming a big thing. Because people talk about this, it means they care about the issue - and I'm sorry for that to happen. I like the black LocoRoco the most; they're the coolest." This states that many journalists asked him about it but never states whether they all got it from the same sources (mainly that one guy's blog). He also never apologizes, just states that he didn't know about the issue and vaguely says, "I'm sorry for that to happen" which is not exactly a full blown apology. Also I think this article by Jeremy Parish talks about the issue much better than all three of those articles. Strongsauce (talk) 11:27, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Music Lyrics are not any language?

Is this verifiable? Has anyone from Sony come out and said that? I personally believe that the lyrics are in the same category as Simlish, but the article should confirm nor deny until it is verified, so I'm removing that comment. -- Glutnix 11:41, 1 July 2006 (UTC)

Never mind, I discovered a cite myself. --Glutnix 12:28, 1 July 2006 (UTC)

In the referenced article, the designer says he creted the game so that persons *speaking* any language would be able to understand how to play the game. He says nothing about the language in which the LocoRocos are singing. I don't understand the meaning of any Japanese, however it certainly sounds like japanese words to me. Well, other than 'jecker'.

I heard a couple of Japanese words, like anata(you), but other than that, its mostly gibberish, although the Pink Loco Roco sound like they're singing in French =) SuperDT 03:01, 16 October 2006 (UTC)

To me it seems like each Locoroco color is fasioned after a defferent language:

  • Yellow - Japanese Children (J-Pop?)
  • Pink - French (Bosa Nova)
  • Blue - Italian (Operatic)
  • Red - Mexican Spanish (Merengue)
  • Green - Spanish (Rock)
  • Black - American English (Scat)

Of course, the actual lyrics of the songs are just the names of the various characters in the game, none of which are any real language. Some are pretty close: The moon is called La Musica, and I know that the black locoroco speaks real english for at least a few words. Either way, it's pretty clever. ~User:Mylakovich

[edit] Unusal Region Release cycle

Does anyone else think its worth noting that even though the game was designed my Sony Japan it was released in the European region first before anywhere else? I think might actaully be the first time this kinda thing has happened. As it very rare that we Europeans get anything from Japan before American let alone before Japan itself. TheEnlightened 19:32, 17 July 2006 (UTC)

Almost the same thing happened with the DS; It was released in America, then Japan, then Europe. But the same exact thing as Loco Roco happened with Gangs of London: It was released in Europe first, then Australia, then America. Poor Japan doesn't get Loco Roco til December 31.
Anyways, I think it is notable enough, and be sure to put the irony in that it was developed in Japan.SuperDT 03:05, 16 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Demo Dl link dead

nothing too major, but the dl link for the demo has dried up, I receive a lovely 404, and I have already spent some time on sony jp looking for psp demos ... I couldnt find any, and am in no position to correct it [ maybe reading jp would help...] PidGin128 07:29, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Clones

What exactly is the reason of having non-commercial links to freely available games very much related to this game removed, this is not even in any way spam, it's a useful link to help interactively demonstrate the game mechanic found in Loco Roco, without breaking any copyright. [edit] Region Differences?

I've just started playing the EU version of the game and at least two demo levels are available. This seems to contradict what currently appears in the article, but I'm not sure (due to the wording). Does the US version have 4 demo levels as opposed to 2 available in other versions? Tajoman 20:32, 12 November 2007 (UTC)
