The area was subdivided for housing after being an area renowned for its market gardens and greenhouses. The Hank family held substantial holdings. The Hank brothers were footballers for West Torrens Football Club with Bob Hank winning a Magarey Medal in both 1946 and 1947.
The suburb is the home of the EDS request management and EDS credit services in the former John Martins bulk store on Pierson St. Prior to EDS's conversion of the warehouse this was used as a storage location for the floats used in the John Martin's Christmas parade.
The suburb has two state primary schools. Lockleys Primary School and Lockleys North Primary School. The nearest state high school is Underdale High School which has David Hookes as one of its past students.
The area was subject to flooding by the River Torrens until the Torrens channel was cut in to replace the wetlands. A large part of Lockleys is within a bend of the River Torrens.

The area also had a Uniting Church on May Tce, but this site was recently sold and a brand new state of the art building was constructed on Sir Donald Bradman Drive in front of the Adelaide College Of Divinity. The Adelaide West Uniting Church holds three services each Sunday, and has gained much respect in the local community with demonstrated commitment to the youth of the area and also to newly arrived refugees making their home in the western suburbs. An African worship service is held at the church on Sunday afternoons each fortnight.
