Locate and trade
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Locate and Trade is a location-based advertising engine developed and maintained by two South African software engineers. The long term aim of the product is to provide the simplest and fastest web mapping service and advertising service on the Internet. Although the system currently supports VML for Internet Explorer the map download time is quicker and has more visual appeal in browsers that support SVG such as Opera and Firefox.

[edit] Features
The map can be zoomed using the mouse wheel or the zoom in and zoom out buttons on the top left corner of the map. Once the user has zoomed in to an appropriate zoom level, the Place Advert button will become active. A registered user can place adverticements at no cost anywhere in the world.
[edit] Coverage
The system uses VMAP0 as its base map, which allows high level international coverage. Place names are provided by the GeoNames database which currently sports more than 6 million place names. Locate and Trade is not designed to be a precision mapping tool, but rather a convenient way to browse and place advertisements of events, property, products, etc.
[edit] Technology
Locate and Trade uses only open source and custom developed software. The database is hosted on a Postgres server, with the PostGIS extension. On standard compliant Internet browsers, the map is drawn using SVG Basic 1.2.
