Dr. Elizabeth "Liz" Cruz is a character in the American television series Nip/Tuck. She is the head anesthesiologist for McNamara/Troy and is played by Roma Maffia.
[edit] Character history
Liz Cruz is the head anesthesiologist for what was originally McNamara/Troy. She is often the voice of reason in the office and a strong-willed, empathetic woman. In addition, she is an out lesbian. During many surgeries she criticizes the idea of what type of surgery they are doing, and to whom. At one point she is even questioned by detective Kit McGraw about what it is like for her to be a person with such morals in the business she is in.
Cruz has a love-hate relationship with Christian Troy. She carried his child, conceived through artificial insemination, although she aborted it when she learned it was likely to have severe birth defects.
In season 3, she resigns from McNamara/Troy after the firm hits financial difficulties, and becomes the general practitioner for De La Mer, a day spa for recovering surgery patients run by Julia McNamara and Gina Russo. She is also questioned about being The Carver, after several pieces of evidence were found after her home was searched. She was later cleared.
She is the first to discover Michelle's "relationship" with James and is almost fired for sexual harassment when she confronts her about it.
In episode number 48 "Shari Noble" (aired Sept. 26th, 2006), Christian takes Liz to a gay bar with intentions to find her a potential girlfriend. Liz goes home with a woman whom she labels a "10" (as yet unnamed). They share a drink before kissing and the scene fades. Liz is later awoken by a ringing phone which is tied to her hand. When she answers she discovers that she is alone and that her right kidney has been surgically removed.
She then gets sick and looks for a new kidney. While being dialyzed, she befriends Dawn Budge (Rosie O'Donnell) who had her ear sliced off during a drive-by robbery. Dawn is found to be a perfect match and she gives Liz one kidney.
Liz soon begins a relationship with Poppy (special guest star Alanis Morissette), a fellow anesthesiologist who convinces her to have cosmetic surgery to improve her image. They have since broken up.
In the season four finale, Liz attempts to kill Escobar Gallardo, brandishing a gun in his face. However, she is calmed and hands the gun to Gala Gallardo, Escobar's wife, who then proceeds to shoot him anyway.
She has moved with the surgery team to Los Angeles, where she has become attracted to Olivia Lord, Julia McNamara's girlfriend, and doubts that Julia truly is a lesbian.
[edit] Mistakes
In the first few episodes of Nip/Tuck, Cruz's last name was listed as Winters.
