[edit] How to use
For Graham Greene (born October 2, 1904, died April 3, 1991):
- {{subst:lived|b=1904|d=1991|key=Greene, Graham}}
Another way to add the categories, is template:lifetime:
- {{subst:lifetime|1904|1991|Greene, Graham}}
Note that both of these templates should be substituted.
[edit] When NOT to use
If there is not a date of death, do not use this template. As this will create Category:Deaths with no year If attribute "d" is left empty.
This will create a category "red link" at the bottom of the page, which may lead to its arbitrary creation and consequent Cfd listing.

- It doesn't have to be listed on CFD - anyone can remove a category from an article, whereas CFD is to remove a category completely. violet/riga (t) 23:15, 9 July 2005 (UTC)
- See Gillo Pontecorvo revision source. The template with attribute "d" empty, creates the category at the bottom. Then if a user decides to click on the "red link" and create the category, it becomes a Cfd problem. <>Who?¿? 23:25, 9 July 2005 (UTC)
- I see what you're saying now - only if that category is created is it a CFD matter. violet/riga (t) 23:28, 9 July 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Comments
[edit] template:lifespan
There probably should not be a listing for template:lifespan in the "How to use" section. It encourages users to use a template that redirects to template:lifetime. It would be preferable if they only use template:lifetime. If it is a problem with naming, then it should be renamed, rather than listing both of them. I suggest removing it from the documentation. Thank you. <>Who?¿? 07:02, 10 July 2005 (UTC)
- Suggest listing it as (Use: {{lifetime}}, but not {{lifespan}} which redirects), as mentioned by Docu, in another conversation. <>Who?¿? 07:09, 10 July 2005 (UTC)
- My suggestion was mainly for templates that aren't used with "subst:". For this one, I would offer all reasonable choices as finally just the categories, not the template is being added to the article. -- User:Docu
- I appologize for mis-interpretting your suggestion. I understand offering different choices, and I too actually prefer {{lifespan}} over the other. Although it is just a redirect, I don't think there should be two options, as this would just encourage mis-use in other situations. If a template is named "A", editors should use "A" and not "B", just because that can. Just my opinion. Thanks. <>Who?¿? 02:44, 12 July 2005 (UTC)

[edit] DEFAULTSORT magic word
A great new feature's been added to Wikipedia's software. As mentioned at Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2007-01-02/Technology report, we can now change the default sort key for a page like so: {{DEFAULTSORT:Washington, George}}. If this were in George Washington then all categories that didn't explicitly override it with their own sort key would put this article under "W". How about adding this to this template, since it seems like something that would be useful to universally apply to biographical articles? It's a pity this template gets substed so much or this would allow us to do a massive categorization cleanup in one fell swoop, but at least future articles will be handled more easily. {{editprotected}} Please put a clear note in the template page saying that Note this template should be substituted. The template is obviously lacking of documentation. -- Magioladitis (talk) 01:47, 12 February 2008 (UTC)
- Not done - but inserted a {{documentation}} template, you should be able to do the rest. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 06:40, 12 February 2008 (UTC)
