Liverpool to Wigan Line
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Liverpool to Wigan Line is a railway line in the north-west of England, between Liverpool Lime Street and Wigan North Western.
From Liverpool Lime Street, the line runs through a long tunnel into Edge Hill. The line then passes the village of Wavertree, named Wavertree Technology Park, which is an interchange for fast express services to Manchester Airport. The next station is Broad Green, which operates the town and hospital of Broad Green, then into the small village of Roby. The next stop is at the large village of Huyton, which is an interchange for commuter trains to Manchester Victoria and Warrington Bank Quay, it also operates the fast services to Blackpool North and Preston. The next station is Prescot, which is a 10 minute walk to the town centre. This also operates the nearest station to Scotchbarn Leisure Centre. The next station is Eccleston Park, which operates the estates and Rugby club of Portico. Then the next station is the large village of Thatto Heath, and next St Helens Central. St. Helens Central station is currently being rebuilt and the new station's building opened in September 2007, but the old building is now closed and being stripped for demolition. This station is an early morning terminus, and is also an interchange for the Blackpool & Preston express trains as well as the fast trains back to Liverpool. Seven more minutes down the line is the village of Garswood, which occasional railtours call at, more recently the Father's Day Fellsman, which from Liverpool called at Huyton, Prescot, St. Helens Central, Garswood, Wigan North Western and non-stop through to Carlisle via the historic Settle line. Next is Bryn, now leaving Merseyside into Greater Manchester. Bryn is a village which is currently undergoing huge redevelopment in the centre. Finally, Wigan North Western. Situated on the West Coast Mainline, passengers may change here for services towards Scotland and London. From 2009, services from Liverpool Lime Street to Glasgow Central/Edinburgh Waverley will commence, so for passengers who regularly travel from Liverpool to Scotland using these Northern Rail services will be given direct links.
