Liverpool Ramblers

Liverpool Ramblers Football Club were formed in 1882 and are the oldest truly non-league team on the planet. Formed by Public School men the club was the first side from Liverpool, to enter the FA Cup Competition. Sir Charles Metcalfe, who played in the FA Cup game against Bolton Wanderers, later worked in Southern Africa as a railway surveyor and was present a the funeral of Cecil Rhodes. J Bruce Ismay, the president of the White Star Shipping Line, was a former player with the club and survived the sinking of the Titanic. Gerald Powys Dewhurst is the only player from the club to be selected to play for England.Liverpool Ramblers were, in 1890, the first team in the world ever to use a goal net. The inventor, JA Brodie, was a close friend of the players who agreed to help him perfect the prototype. A member of the club once entered a horse for the Grand National Steepchase where the jockey carried the club colours around the course.

Liverpool Ramblers, after playing on several locations, finally settled, in 1937, at their present home in Crosby. The club continue to play only friendly matches and, in 2007, they celebrated their 125th anniversary.
