[edit] History

Liverpool Hospital was originally run as a hospital for soldiers and convicts, starting as a tent hospital in the 1790s. The first brick hospital was established in 1813 on land besides the Georges River and a larger stone hospital building was designed by Francis Greenway, built by convict labour and was opened in 1825. This building is currently occupied by South Western Sydney Institute of TAFE, and located next to the current Hospital. The entrance hall of the TAFE includes pictures of the campus during the early years of this century.

The existing hospital building incorporates the Don Everett building (1975), Ron Dunbier House student and nursing accommodation (1979), Alex Grimson (1983), Health Services Building (1992), South Western Area Pathology Service (1993), Caroline Chisholm Centre for Women and Babies (1994), Cancer Therapy Centre (1995), Brain Injury Unit (1995), Clinical Building (1997) and Mental Health Unit (2005).

The Hospital became a principal teaching hospital of UNSW in 1989. In an agreement with UNSW, the University of Western Sydney will also send a limited number of final year students to Liverpool Hospital commencing in 2011.

[edit] Future Developments

In May 2006, the NSW Treasury announced plans to invest A$390m in redevelopment of Liverpool Hospital (Stage 2) which will see Liverpool Hospital become the largest public hospital in Australia.
