[edit] History
The originally scheduled DVD release date (autumn 2004) was postponed because of changes and improvements made to the show since the initial filming. A New Day... was re-shot in high-definition during the January 17-21, 2007 week.[5] According to the "A New Day: the Secrets" documentary on the second disc, one of the major reasons for the delay was that Dion and her producers gradually realized that Dion's change to a short blonde bob for A New Day was highly unpopular with her fan base, and the hairstyle also looked terrible on screen during the first DVD shoot. As a result, she returned to brunette hair with extensions.
The Live in Las Vegas - A New Day... DVD includes the last version of the show, performed from November 2006 till the end. But during A New Day... previous years, Dion performed also seven other songs: "Nature Boy," "At Last," "Fever," "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face," "Have You Ever Been in Love," "Et je t'aime encore," and "What a Wonderful World." Some of them are included on the A New Day... Live in Las Vegas CD, released in June 2004.[6]
[edit] Promotion
"The Power of Love," "I Drove All Night," "I Surrender," and "I Wish" from the DVD were first released on the deluxe edition of Céline Dion's album Taking Chances (November 2007). An exclusive sneak preview from the show was also included.
A New Day... was shown on television in selected countries, including the Netherlands (first part on November 18 and second one on November 25, 2007 on SBS 6), Spain (November 29, 2007 on TVE2), South Africa (first part on December 2 and second one on December 8, 2007 on SABC 3), Italy (December 25, 2007 on Italia 1), and Quebec (bonus features on January 20, 2007 and the show on January 27, 2007 on TVA).
A New Day... was also broadcast to movie theatres in some countries, including Poland (Multikino on December 5, 2007)[7] and U.S. (various theatres on December 17, 2007).[8]
The Quebec TV station TVA broadcasted a TV special dedicated to the last show of Céline Dion at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, on December 16, 2007. The show, entitled Les Adieux de Céline Dion à Las Vegas (Céline Dion's Vegas Farewells), was produced by Julie Snyder. The broadcasting has been conceived by Dion and René Angélil. The cameras entered the intimacy of the couple during latest show's night (December 15th). We were able to see Céline Dion leaving her home with her husband and their son who attended his mother's show. We saw Dion in her dressing room, in the elevator that took her to the stage. The special lasted 45 minutes.
[edit] Chart success
According to the Quebec press, Dion's much-anticipated and long-awaited DVD was completely sold-out in Quebec (Canada) in less than few hours after the release.[9] Céline Dion made history on January 18, 2008 as Live in Las Vegas - A New Day... became the only music DVD to be certified Triple Diamond status in Canada, for over 300,000 units sold (although Le Journal de Montréal reported two days earlier that the DVD has sold more than 400,000 copies). Only 5 other DVD releases have ever reached Double Diamond. Dion's DVD captured also the biggest debut week sales in Nielsen SoundScan history for a DVD only release - over 70,000 copies. And if we add several stores not considered by SoundScan, the DVD exceeded the 100,000 units in the first week. Something like that never happened in the whole Canadian music history.[10] Live in Las Vegas - A New Day... is helding the number 1 position on the Music Video Chart in Canada since its release.[11]
Outside Canada, the DVD peaked at number 1 in the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Japan (international chart), Netherlands, Belgium Wallonie, Belgium Flandres, Denmark, New Zealand and Estonia. It reached number 2 in Portugal and Sweden, number 3 in Australia, Ireland and in Greece, number 4 in Austria, Japan (overall chart) and number 6 in Italy. Live in Las Vegas - A New Day... also debuted in the top 10 for DVD sales in Finland and Germany.[12]
Close to 500,000 copies of the DVD have been sold worldwide in the first week.[13] Live in Las Vegas - A New Day... was certified 3× Diamond (300,000) in Canada[14] (over 400,000 copies sold according to Le Journal de Montréal), 3× Platinum (60,000) in France (120,000 copies have been sold and it's now eligible for Diamond), 2× Platinum in Australia (30,000), Platinum in New Zealand (5,000), and Gold in Belgium (15,000) and Portugal (4,000). In Japan, it has sold 30,000 copies so far. The DVD has sold 305,000 copies in the U.S. being eligible for 6x platinum certification.[15]
According to Belgian magazine Cine Tele Revue from May 2008, the dvd sold 2 million copies to date, which make it one of the best selling DVDs in the music history.
