From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The term cup-board originally was used to describe an open shelved side table for displaying plates and cups. These open cup-boards typically had between one and three display tiers, and at time a drawer or drawers fitted to it. The word cup-board gradually came to mean a closed piece of furniture.
