[edit] Dropping lithium into water

"It is a violent reaction, and so much heat is given off that the hydrogen produced burns with a bright purple flame." Does the hydrogen really burn? I've tried dropping lithium into water just today, and although a lot of heat was produced, no combustion took place. --Bowlhover 00:19, 27 February 2007 (UTC)
