The Republic of Lithuania (Lithuanian: Lietuva; full - Lietuvos Respublika) is a republic in northern Europe. One of the three Baltic States along the Baltic Sea, it shares borders with Latvia to the north, Belarus to the southeast, Poland to the south, and the Kaliningrad Oblast of Russia to the southwest.

The Lithuanian press ban was a ban on all Lithuanian language publications printed in the Latin alphabet within the Russian Empire, which controlled Lithuania at the time. Lithuanian-language publications that used the Cyrillic alphabet were allowed and even encouraged. The concept arose after the failed January Uprising of 1863, taking the form of an administrative order in 1864, and was not lifted until April 24, 1904. The Russian courts reversed two convictions in press ban cases in 1902 and 1903, and the setbacks of the Russo-Japanese War in early 1904 brought about a loosened Russian policy towards minorities.

It was illegal to print, import, distribute, or possess any publications in the Latin alphabet. Tsarist authorities hoped that this measure, part of a larger Russification plan, would decrease Polish influence on Lithuanians and would return them to what were considered their ancient historical ties with Russia. However, Lithuanians organized printing outside the Empire, largely in the Lithuania Minor (East Prussia), and in the United States. Knygnešiai smuggled illegal books and periodicals through the border. The number of such publications kept increasing despite strict sanctions and persecutions against the activists. The ban created a well-defined and organized opposition to Russian rule and culture - the opposite of its original intent. The Lithuanian historian Edvardas Gudavičius has described the ban as a test of the concept of Lithuania: Had there been no resistance, the language would have become a historical footnote, and the modern nation would never have been created. Question: Can Lithuanian Citizens work anywhere in the European Union, or is there some kind of work permit that is needed?

Answer: Since May 1, 2004 Lithuania is a member of the European Union. That means Lithuanians, as EU citizens, can travel and work anywhere in EU without any visas and permits. See, for example, here. However, there is still some paperwork involved. For example, UK has a [Worker Registration Scheme http://www.ucl.ac.uk/hr/docs/wpguide_wrs.php]. So you should check with a specific country if they have any special requirements. Does that answer your question? Renata 01:14, 18 March 2006 (UTC)

Question: Does anyone have a nice audio recording of Tautiška giesmė? As motivation, you should know that the Anthem of Lithuanian SSR has some high-quality audio links! Novickas 18:58, 10 October 2006 (UTC)

Answer: Hello. You can find one here [5] (not sure if the quality is good enough for you). From the same site I got the french traduction I used to update fr:Tautiška giesmė and was planning to add the audio file. But I am a newby with wikipedia and I still didn't investigate how to create the ogg file. I've already asked and got authorisation from the owner of the blog Gilles/Dzilis to use the audio file. If you add the anthem to wikicommon please letme know Jmnil 10:39, 28 December 2006 (UTC)

Question: The article Lithuanian nationality law is missing. Is there somebody with some experience on the matter to start a stub?

There is a Category:Lithuanian law, which goes into Category:Law by country; for example Law of Lithuania. Novickas 15:09, 23 February 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for your answer but my question was really referring to the law defining the legal condition to acquire the Lithuanian citizenship and more specifically the restriction related to the multiple nationalities. Sumilar articles already exist for other nationalities (see Nationality law) Jmnil 15:25, 23 February 2007 (UTC)
Created the article...contains the entire text of the law, hope there's no complaints about that. The law is very clearly written, so to me it made sense to do it that way rather than paraphrase it. Novickas 17:52, 23 February 2007 (UTC)
This discussion should probably be continued at Talk:Lithuanian nationality law. Novickas 14:31, 24 February 2007 (UTC)
