Little River Band of Ottawa Indians
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Little River Band of Ottawa Indians is a tribe of Ottawa Indians whose headquarters are located in Manistee, Michigan. The Tribe became well known in the area after the opening of the Little River Casino and Resort. The tribe's original language is Anishinaabemowin, a standardized form of four original Indian languages. Most elders can still speak the full language but the tribe is spread out far beyond their reservation and the language is slowly dying off, as are the people.
[edit] Tribal government
The Tribe is headed by a council of elders and an elected omega who acts as chief over the people although neither hold any real power beyond the immediate vicinity of the reservation. The Tribe has created a tribal Constitution. New Omega's are elected by the council every two years, and any Omega may run as long as they are able to lead the people. Another separate election is held for those in charge of various departments including Housing, Health, and Money distribution.
