Talk:List of wine styles by country

What's the point of this page?
Rather than wine styles per country, it seems to be a list of grape types per country???? --BodegasAmbite 15:28, 28 May 2007 (UTC)
- I would very much like to ask the same!!!
- Is it meant to be a list of wine styles, and if so, under which definition of the term? As an example, it lists "Barolo" (an Italian DOCG from a narrowly defined area, made by Nebbiolo variety grapes), "Amarone" (an Italian wine primarily definied by its production method) and "Pinot Gris" (a grape variety) together. Few people would say that a dry lightweight Italian Pinot Grigio represent the same "wine style" as an intensely sweet Pinot Gris Sélection des Grains Nobles from Alsace under any meaningful definition of the term. Just as Bourgogne Grands Crus from Côte de Nuits are difficult to see as the same wine style as an Alsace rosé (both are Pinot Noir).
- Is it meant to list all existing or common wine styles in terms of varieties? If so, how come there is no entry for Pinot Noir from Germany, which has the world's third largest plantings with 12,000 ha? Or is it meant to list wines which are very common on the international export market? If so, why is sparkling Cabernet Sauvignon listed at all?
- Listing all existing or allowed "styles" per country in a list generally seems like a hopeless task.
- At the moment I'm not sure if this list really adds any useful information at all within the scope of WP:WINE. Tomas e (talk) 02:05, 13 January 2008 (UTC)
