Talk:List of violists
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"The term violist is perhaps ambiguous, since it could also be used to refer to someone who plays the viol. In practice, this is not a great problem since there have been few players of the latter instrument since the 18th century."
Took this out. There are plenty of people around who do play the viol. I am not sure that there is a problem with the word "violist" though. Is this just speculation (in which case it should stay out) or is there some evidence, in which case let's discuss it please. Nevilley 00:52 Apr 20, 2003 (UTC)
- Well, I play the viola and I used to play the viol (BTW I was the one who put the comment in originally), and I've always found the term ambiguous. I prefer the term viola player (or viol player) to violist, but the latter does certainly seem to be quite standard. When I said "few viol players" I meant relative to viola players. On balance, I think that the comment probably isn't necessary in the article, though it might be nice to have a link to the viol page there in any case. Magnus 12:24 Apr 24, 2003 (UTC)
[edit] New entries
There have been a couple of new entries recently, by the same IP address. This IP vandalised the viola page, but I can't be sure of the merits of the edits here. I have found references to Nicholas Bootiman possibly as an upcoming new soloist, but the only reference to Emmanuella Reiter I have found is in an NEC program as a recent Master of Music recipient. Can anyone offer information on these two people? Aethir 06:17, 19 December 2005 (UTC)
I'm not so happy to see this here - someone (probably a friend) is having a 'laugh' it seems. Feeling most uncomfortable about publicity beyond what I've earnt, I would be happy if you could remove my name from here please! You may as well remove the other too. I might remove this myself if it hasn't been done soon, as it makes a mess of the page and this questioning is positively bad publicity! Thanks, N.B. (mentioned above).
[edit] New Entry
I have seen someone remove some of the listed violists. I had to add back the violist who was removed. The individuals on this list should be of substantial note. The individual whom I put back in has won first-prize in one of the major instrumental competitions and has premiered the Schnittke's violist and recorded the Peter Bartok version of the Bartok Viola Concerto for Naxos. This recording had sold over 25,000 CDs since its release in 1998. This is an example of substantial credentials. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Marcparella (talk • contribs) 21:57, 13 May 2008 (UTC)
