[edit] Multiple mascots
Can a company have multiple mascots? For example, could we consider Mario and Pikachu both to be mascots for Nintendo? Jacoplane 00:18, 1 August 2005 (UTC)
- I honestly don't know. This is a good question. Where do you draw the line? Every other company has usually 1 standoutish character making that character their mascot, but Nintendo doesn't just have 1. Mario is best known as their mascot, but I would consider Donkey Kong, Link, Samus, Pikachu, and Fox to also be included in Nintendo's core group. Theres no doubt that when you see those characters you automatically picture Nintendo.
- Should be noted that Wikipedia has Mickey, Donald Duck, and Tinkerbell categorized as mascots of Disney. K1Bond007 05:31, August 1, 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Master Chief = Mascot?!?
...I don't think so. Where exactly do you see the MC used as a mascot? I haven't. He's popular, yes, given that Halo is popular, but I don't think Microsoft HAS a mascot... --Shadow Hog 03:28, 2 August 2005 (UTC)
- How about Clippy ? :) Jacoplane 11:35, 2 August 2005 (UTC)
- Ha. I'm in agreement with Shadow Hog here. K1Bond007 21:58, August 3, 2005 (UTC)
- I'm in agreement about Clippy, but he isn't exactly a video game character, now is he?
- I don't understand why Master Chief is up there now. I thought Microsoft has no mascot? Thunderbrand 17:10, August 22, 2005 (UTC)
- He's certainly as much a mascot for them as Blinx is, he just isn't as formulaic.
- I do say you're wrong on that one. As I'd said, he's popular, but he just isn't the face of the company like pretty much any and every mascot is. He's the poster boy for Halo, no more, no less. I say we re-remove it. --Shadow Hog 23:30, 22 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Capcom's mascot
I'm removing Ryu because Capcom's corporate page explicitly says that Mega Man is the official mascot; there is no mention of Ryu. --Pagrashtak 14:07, 4 August 2005 (UTC)
- Forget the question. :P Havok 20:59, 4 August 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Jak and Daxter, Ratchet & Clank and Sly Cooper
Sony Computer Entertainment actually have two pair of mascots: Jak and Daxter and Ratchet & Clank and the Sly Cooper. Three games for each one isn't little. --Mateusc 22:38, 11 August 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Polygon Man ?
I strong disagree Polygon Man in the list: less visibility, early abandoned in PlayStation era and substituted for Spyro the Dragon. Anyone appearace in another game, if this "mascot" continue here, should will be added toons of others to make justice. --Mateusc 22:45, 11 August 2005 (UTC)
- Even though Polygon Man hasn't appeared in a game, he is still considered SCE's old mascot. It is just nice trivia to know about "him" because sometimes the mainstream video game media likes to mention him such as Toastyfrog/Jeremy Parish in one of his 1up.com articles [1] or Gamespy with their E3 retrospect. [edit] Klonoa/Blinx
I'm not convinced about Klonoa being Namco's mascot, as Pac-man already fills that role. And I definitely don't buy Blinx as Microsoft's mascot. I'm removing these two unless someone can present references. --Pagrashtak 05:07, 12 August 2005 (UTC)
-
- Klonoa: Four games, one in this generation isn't suficient? And the presence in the Namco x Capcom what's seem by you?
-
- Blinx is the true Microsoft/Xbox mascot, if didn't obtainded comercial sucess, this isn't suficient to take off the mascot status, even because the Microsoft has projects for it in Xbox 360. --Mateusc 02:48, 15 August 2005 (UTC)
-
-
- No, it's not. A mascot is not defined by a number of games. Goombas have been in more than four games, but I wouldn't call them mascots. --Pagrashtak 01:13, 31 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Company ---> Developer and Publisher
I think we should split the "Company" heading into 2 headings: "Developer" and "Publisher". The fact that Crash Bandicoot's company is listed Sony Computer Entertainment while Spyro the Dragon's company is listed as Insomniac Games is just silly. Spliting this category could alleviate some of the confusion people have - "Whose Mascot Is It Anyway?" -Hyad 05:21, August 19, 2005 (UTC)
- Thank you, Kertrats, for splitting the heading. -Hyad 07:36, August 29, 2005 (UTC)
- Happy to. Kertrats 15:46, 29 August 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Intellivision's Running Man
While he is undoubtly the mascot of the company, I have some doubts about him. Should he be called "Intellivision Man" or "Running Man" ? Also, he appeared first on which game? I have a faint idea it is from Deadly Discs of Tron, although I'm not sure enough to add to the article. wS;✉ 07:11, 22 August 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Mascot verification
I have some problems with mascots:
- Segata Sanshiro is listed as the mascot for "Sega Saturn", which is not a company. Sonic is the mascot for Sega.
- Blinx and Master Chief are both listed as current Microsoft mascots. If this was changed to a particular division of Microsoft it would be easier to swallow (Master Chief has never tried to sell me Windows), but I still wouldn't buy it.
The main problem seems to be that if a major video game series has been worked on by a certain company, then someone adds the main character as the mascot for that company without verifying it first. For example: Spyro is listed as the mascot for Insomniac Games, but Insomniac Games doesn't even own the license to Spyro. --Pagrashtak 17:46, 22 August 2005 (UTC)
- The first is a problem related to how the table was prepared - I don't like the "companies" header - this isn't List of video game industry corporate mascots, but simply List of video game mascots, so it should be renamed to something that includes both companies and products. Also, remember that Sonic was pretty much unexistant in the Sega Saturn (Sonic Jam was a compilation, R an attempt at the popular "platform characters go racing" fad and 3D the backup plan of Sonic X-Treme), and Segata became the de facto mascot of the console in Japan. But like I've said, this is mostly due to the table name. wS;✉ 19:12, 22 August 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Does this formatting help?
I went through and disambiguated between publisher and developer. Does that help this chart at all? Kertrats 04:56, 25 August 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Confused
I'm been away from Wikipedia for a while (cross-country move, borrowed internet at the moment), and this article looks a lot different. With the "mascot for" column, what's the point of having the developer and publisher columns? Those pertain to games, not the actual mascot. And how can the "mascot for" column be blank? Bomberman is a mascot, but not a mascot for anything? It doesn't make sense. --Pagrashtak 01:18, 31 August 2005 (UTC)
- Any objections to removing the dev/pub columns and mascots with a blank "mascot for:" entry? --Pagrashtak 14:01, 4 September 2005 (UTC)
- What happened was because the main defining columns were centered around developers and publishers of games where the mascot characters appear, people got excited and added any cute or well-known game character they could think of, regardless of whether they were used as iconic representatives for something or not.(besides the game) No objections to removing dev/pub here :). --24.114.252.183 20:04, 5 September 2005 (UTC)
- Due to lack of objection, I have removed the dev and pub columns and removed mascots that were listed as mascots for nothing. --Pagrashtak 21:56, 5 September 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Now that we have a "Mascot for:" column
Would it be reasonable to remove the Developer/Publisher columns? --24.114.252.183 01:19, 31 August 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Crash Bandicoot
Shouldn't Crash Bandicoot be considered the mascot for the Sony PlayStation's first generation console? I've never played any of his games, but knowing he was extremely popular then is a testament to his mascot-ness. He could be considered the heir to "Polygon Man", of whom I had never heard, personally. Eric 04:31, September 6, 2005 (UTC)
- Popularity alone does not a mascot make. Link is much more popular than Crash, but he is not a mascot. --Pagrashtak 00:23, 7 September 2005 (UTC)
- Ah, but wasn't Crash a creation of Sony, intent only to be distributed on its systems? Is that not the essence of a corporate mascot? Eric 03:23, September 7, 2005 (UTC)
- To reuse my example, isn't Link a creation of Nintendo, intended to be distributed on only Nintendo systems? --Pagrashtak 03:26, 7 September 2005 (UTC)
- Ah, but wasn't Crash a creation of Sony, intent only to be distributed on its systems? Is that not the essence of a corporate mascot? Eric 03:23, September 7, 2005 (UTC)
- To me, the "PS" logo with the "chung" sound effect was more of a mascot for the Playstation than any platformer characters. Find some corporate docs or marketing materials that use Crash in a way similar to how, say, Sonic or Mario were used to promote and identify the Genesis/NES/SNES and their parent companies, and maybe you'd have a case.--24.114.252.183 21:35, 8 September 2005 (UTC)

[edit] That Darn Zeke...
Shouldn't we introduce, or at least consider Zeke from Rise of Legends as a mascot? After all, he is dubbed the unofficial mascot of the game by the RoL community, shouldn't that at least count? Frostmourne 16 12:25, 5 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Blinx
last I checked Blinx is not a mascot Sonicrules2 02:51, 4 March 2007 (UTC)Sonicrules2
