Talk:List of theaters for dance

[edit] criterion
It's hard to determine exactly which theaters fit the criterion to be "theaters for dance". It seems to me that, although some of these theaters-- City Center, PS 122, NY State Theater, and the Metropolitan Opera House-- present a lot of dance performances, their missions are not to present dance, specifically, and should therefore be removed from the list. It seems that the theaters whose mission is to serve specifically as a venue for dance performances fit into a few categories:
- venues run by dance presenters (like Dance Place, Danspace, DTW, the Joyce, ODC, etc) - these venues typically also offer classes and have resident companies; often the space is convertible studio/theater
- venues run by dance studios (like Jack Guidone, Joria, Green Space) - for use by the studio for recitals, typically rent their space out for other performances; usually smaller spaces, studio converts into theater (focus on the studio)
- venues owned by large, well-established dance companies (Mark Morris Dance Center) - space is used primarily by a single company
Although many theaters that don't fit into these categories house dance performances, I would not consider them to be theaters for dance.

[edit] City Center, Metropolitan Opera House, and New York State Theatre
City Center functions as a producer with its annual Fall for Dance festival, an enormous undertaking; it and the Metropolitan Opera House are the two homes of the American Ballet Theatre, one of the most important dance companies in the US. The Met. is also frequent home to the major Russian ballet companies. This list is meaningless if they are omitted; likewise the New York State Theater, which was built to George Balanchine's specifications for the New York City Ballet. There is at least as strong a case for these venues as for B.A.M. I would agree with you that such spaces as the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark and the New Jersey State Theatre are not such frequent presenters of dance that they belong on this specialized list (though the former is Savion Glover's home theatre and the latter has hosted the ballet from Perm.)
