[edit] Symphony No. 34 (Haydn)

Haydn Symphony no. 34 - whether this is in fact in D minor was brought into question by Larsen (the entry in Haydn's own catalog has D major, apparently, with the sole D minor movement - the other three are in major - in second place; if indeed the identification of the work as a D minor symphony is based on an inauthentic/corrupted edition (is the manuscript lost? I expect then it is... or maybe it was when Larsen made his conjecture, a half-century ago) in which the order of movements is interchanged (humor me), then a D major symphony (D major - D minor slow movement - D major minuet - D major finale) has become the D minor sinfonia da chiesa (D minor slow movement - D major fast - D major minuet - etc.) that we all think the symphony is...

I would love to know what the present state of scholarship is on this, and realize the best place to ask this is in any article on Symphony No. 34 that might emerge... Schissel | Sound the Note! 18:40, 21 November 2007 (UTC)

Yes. Interesting. Normally, I'd define a classical era symphony's key by the key of the first theme in the opening sonata-form movement... only this symphony is in sonata da chiesa form and the sonata-form movement comes second. That was my take on the ambiguity. Sonata da chiesa form was quite common with Haydn so I see no reason to speculate about inauthentic manuscripts without citations. The minor/major designation for this symphony is perhaps a bit pedantic in the grand scheme of things, but finding out which list to add #34 to is by definition a pedantic issue. If things get too complicated we could always add it to both with a parenthetical note. DavidRF (talk) 21:47, 21 November 2007 (UTC)
Not sure how much weight to give BMG Classical in these kinds of matters (after all, they routinely misspell Dvořák's name) but on the page for Thomas Fay's recordings of "Haydn, Sym. Nos. 39, 34, 40, 50," No. 34 is listed as
  • 05. Symphony No. 34 in D minor/D major, H. 1/34: Adagio
  • 06. Symphony No. 34 in D minor/D major, H. 1/34: Allegro
  • 07. Symphony No. 34 in D minor/D major, H. 1/34: Menuet - Trio
  • 08. Symphony No. 34 in D minor/D major, H. 1/34: Presto assai
A friend of mine bought this CD. I'll ask him what the booklet says on the matter of key. Jindřichův Smith (talk) 00:39, 22 November 2007 (UTC)

I created a stub article for this symphony. DavidRF (talk) 04:53, 28 November 2007 (UTC)
