Talk:List of statues
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Even though Puerto Ricans may not consider themselves to be in the U.S., they are de facto, as they have U.S. citizenship. However, should Puerto Rico become fully independent, then the list shall be split. WhisperToMe 19:21, 14 Feb 2004 (UTC)
I decided to do a comprimise. The "United States" section is now "United States, including its territories".
I wouldnt say de facto, more like de jure, cause most Puerto Ricans consider ourselves Hispanic, part of the Latin American culture (and most other Latins feel that way about us too) , etc. Id say more De jure because while politically there are papers that say otherwise, culturally, the island is really Latin America. Add to that that mostly all hispanics consider us to be part of Latin America too, and well...this is page to talk aboout the list of statues but I just wanted to point that out.
There should be a list of statues based on height.

Or perhaps include statues from nations older than just a few hundred years? Hmmm?
It seems to be incorrect that the Statue of Liberty is the tallest statue. The Mother Russia statue at Mamayev Kurgan is, from what I can understand, taller both with or without pedestal, but definitely without. 83.109.30.14 01:54, 6 Jun 2005 (UTC) Hm, upon closer investigation, the Buddha of Ushiku, Japan has them both beat. 83.109.30.14 02:07, 6 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Neglected Countries
I'm not an expert on statues but I know that many countries have their own famous sculptures. This list seems to me to be biased in favour of the USA. There are nearly 200 independent nations in the world (the exact figure escapes me), and, whilst I don't know if they all have famous statues, I'm willing to bet most countries do whilst the USA is technically just one country. Granted, it's a very large country, but as a British teenage non-expert doing a homework project, it strikes me as odd that I had heard of the Sphinx, Christ the Redeemer, the Colossus, the Venus de Milo, and so on, and yet most of this page is taken up by American statues I've never heard of. These statues may well be famous in the states - indeed, I'm not going to pretend they're all new even to me - but I'm sure this page should provide information about statues in the countries it currently neglects.
UPDATE: Nobody responded yet, so thought I'd add this apology; there are lots of American statues on the list, but usually just one per state, which seems fair enough. So forgive me, America... it's Canada who's the real culprit! I checked again, and the country that really takes up more than it's fair share of space is Canada. Now if Canada were particularly famous for it's statues, that would be fair enough, but I haven't heard of any of them, whereas I have at least heard of the Statue of Liberty and Lincoln's memorial. My argument remains the same as before: if these statues really are all that famous they sholud remain here, but otherwise, they aren't relevant, as Wikipedia is meant to be unbiased and pages are supposed to do what they say on the tin - that is to say, this is meant to be a list of statues worldwide, not of Canadian statues.
Oh, and by the way, I'm not some stuck up Brit who hates Canada and the USA; I actually have a lot of respect for those countries. I'd just prefer it if all nations were covered. In fact, I should probably add some English statues now, and I hope people a bit more knowlegeable about the subject could provide some for, say, Japan or China.
[edit] North Korea
North Korea has a lot of very large statues.
[edit] It seems to me
that this list should only include statues that have articles about them in wikipedia. To try and list every statue in the world is . . . . pointless [opinion], where as having a list that will take the searcher to articles about these statues seems very worthwhile. [edit] Thiruvalluvar statue
The claim that the statue of Thiruvalluvar near Kanyakumari is the highest placement of any statue on Earth is absolutely false. The statue is placed almost at sea level, not 3,832 meters above it. Check out pictures here: http://www.shunya.net/Pictures/South%20India/Kanyakumari/Kanyakumari.htm. Even if it actually were 3,832 meters above sea level, it would still be placed far lower than the entire town of Wenzhuan in Tibet. It would be hard to accept the idea that Wenzhuan has no statuary of any sort, especially if we accept the definition of "statue" to be broad enough that the 4.5-inch Venus of Willendorf qualifies.
