[edit] List of shipwrecks in 1982
Copied from my talk page
MS Johanna has photographs on the Hartland Point article, which was the ref for the fact.
- I don't want to come off as a jerk, really, but photos aren't references (unless they have their own article in which case I'm sure an exception would be made). Especially these photos, honestly even if they (photos in general) counted as references these would fail our rule about verifiability.
- (PS Because this thread is about the list I'm gonna move it to the talk page there so others can participate if they want to.) Anynobody 07:30, 27 April 2008 (UTC)

- Does this photo qualify as a reference? I haven't written an article on the Johanna as I can't find enough info on her yet. Anyone got an IMO Number for her? Mjroots (talk) 07:46, 27 April 2008 (UTC)

- I'm sorry but, no, it doesn't. The reason geograph.org.uk isn't a valid source is the same reason You tube, other wikis, blogs, or discussion boards usually* aren't. (Unless the article is about or notable to them.) The closest thing I've seen to a reliable source dedicated to photos of ships is navsource.org, but the key word is closest because it doesn't count either unfortunately. (Maritimequest.com is also close.) Anynobody 08:27, 27 April 2008 (UTC)

- There are three photos on the Geograph square for the wreck location, all by different photographers (editors), which back up the removed info, and the looting in the Daily Mail ref. I don't see why we can't accept these as corroborating evidence. The info can only be edited by the original uploader of the photographs, so we should AGF that it is accurate enough (can forgive the 1983 date as accident occurred on last day of 1982). If the three photos were all by the same person, then I'd agree more about the verifiability issue, as that could be seen as one person's POV. This reference gives a wreck date of 2 January 1982, and confirms she was Dutch, homeported in Groningen. Mjroots (talk) This is another reference that gives the date as 31 December 1982. (Redent) There are three photos on the Geograph square... The thing is Geograph isn't a reliable source because anyone can add anything without regard to fact checking or other scrutiny. It's the same reason we can't use amateur You Tube footage as a source for what we write here. (Unless the article is specifically about the video, an example would be Bus Uncle.)
I'd look for more refs along the lines of the www.dailymail.co.uk article you found. (PS We also don't assume good faith in regard to sources - the AGF guideline is actually about assuming good faith among editors on Wikipedia.) Anynobody 05:43, 1 May 2008 (UTC)
