Just confused as to whether this page is supposed to be of contemporary or historic railway companies? The current German railway is not the Bundesbahn but has been Deutsche Bahn since about 1992. Also ideally the Belgian railway should be SNCB/NMBS to reflect both languages. -- Arwel 00:30 May 7, 2003 (UTC)

In general I think lists of companies should include both current and past, because a) you don't have to edit every time a company goes under, and b) a reader looking for a company is going to have a hard time finding it in the list if he/she doesn't know that it disappeared or merged a couple years previously. I disagree. This has the potential to make the list impossibly large: there are hundreds and hundreds of former railway companies in Great Britain and Ireland alone. We should confine the list to currently operating railways (though there is no reason why, at the end of a country's entry, there cannot be a link to the likes of "Railway history of Xland" where such articles exist). Compare the United States solution in this list. If a former railway company is mentioned in the Wikipedia it should be directly findable in any case. -- Picapica 10:06, 13 November 2005 (UTC)

My source of information is a book called "railways of the world" written in the 1970s, so some of the information may be a bit dated G-Man may 7th
