[edit] Dil Se

I think Dil Se was fairly popular... could this be added? gren 9 July 2005 04:39 (UTC)

Yup. Good music from A.R. Rahman, yes? I've only heard the music, haven't seen the music. But it makes lots of "best movies" lists.
Any more you want to add? We occasionally get someone adding the latest hit, but the older films still need LOTS of work. If I wasn't try to clean up after Striver, I could put some more time into the movies <g>. Zora 9 July 2005 05:17 (UTC)
One of Mani Ratnam's worst movie and was also a big dud. The music and cinematography was good though. --PamriTalk 04:49, 30 October 2005 (UTC)
I JUST came here wanting to post the EXACT same thing. I am adding it to the list. If anyone protests, remove it. --Shell 23:53, 19 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Deleted Iqbal

Some added Iqbal. From what I've read about it (I haven't seen it), it sounds like a movie I would like. However, I just checked on Ibos and it's way way down on the list of 2005 movies. Not even rated as a hit, just a movie that earned back its expenses. Some of the biggest hits of 2005 (per Ibos), No Entry and Kaya Kool Hain Hum, aren't even on the list. I get the feeling that fans of particular films, or particular actors, are just putting their favs up there.

On the one hand, I'd hate to make the list strictly by box office numbers. Some of my favorite films, East or West, never did that well at the box office. However, if we don't have some guidelines, we'll end up in the endless wrangling that ensues on Usenet when someone puts up a "best" list. I thought that "most popular" would be less controversial, but we don't seem to be following any particular rules in determining what's popular.

Comments? Zora 03:26, 27 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Mass deletions required

By popular movies, I assume you are referring to the cream of the lot. And box office performance is not considered ??? The following movies have to be deleted

  • 1. Garam Masala (2005) (Has no place on this list, considering that better movies like Hera Pheri, Hungama, Muskurahat etc.. are missing from the list)
  • 2. Waqt - (2005)
  • 3. Dhoom (2004)
  • 4. Sargam (movie) (1979).
  • 5. The great Gambler (1979) (Okay so it had great songs, but thats not enough)

Pruthu 05:13, 3 February 2006 (UTC)

Are you insane? GM, Waqt and Dhoom are very popular. Although I personally think that GM is too amerianized >_>. --Shell <e> 05:39, 4 February 2006 (UTC)

We need guidelines, or we could be arguing forever. I'd say that for films after 1990, we should go by box office. The top five for each year, and no more. For films before then, perhaps a combination of box office and "evergreen" status. The movies that people watch on TV and buy on DVD and remember fondly. Those may not be the BEST movies, by anyone's standards. For BEST, how about linking to a few sites with BEST lists -- noncommercial ones, like Upperstall? [1] Then instead of Wikipedia endorsing films, we could just say, "Look at the sites and decide whose judgment you trust". Zora 07:22, 4 February 2006 (UTC)

I am not related to wiki:Indian Cinema project, but this list looks seriously overpopulated to me (2000+ section). I agree with Pruthu on deletion. Having too many movies on popular list undermines usefullness or credibility of the list. Only movies which are given superhit ratings should be listed. We may use indiafm and rediff movies for this. AshishG (talk · contribs)
I added links to "best" lists elsewhere. I also broke up the 2000+ entries by year. I suggested five per year -- the only year that goes over five is 2005. We need to prune three from that list, if you agree that five is a good limit. Zora 01:13, 8 March 2006 (UTC)
I pruned. I added No Entry, though I hated to do so. I also added a link to the IBOS list of top 2005 movies

[edit] 2006 additions?

we can start with Rang De Basanti Madhav 18:44, 3 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Missing the masterpiece of Bollywood

Kamal Hasan's Pushpak. Along with Sholay it's considered the greatest Hindi movie ever made. I don't remember the date, but it should definitely be on this list. It probably has the highest rating of any movies in IMDB (over 9.6). 06:02, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Going by the IBOS figures

Dang, this impartiality business hurts. I'm putting up the IBOS results year by year, and going strictly by the top five in choosing the recent films. Films I think are good, that should be promoted, are disappearing. But unless someone comes up with another way to rate the movies, this is what we have. It seems the only alternative to endless arguments. Zora 22:19, 21 March 2006 (UTC)

This article has become junkyard now. Unless there is consesus on criteria for selection, this will end up becoming list of random bollywood films. What is Taxi No 9211 doing now? Limiting five per year is also problematic because a good movie will be missed if five other good movies are released in that year. What about using IMDB ratings a criteria? We can select unquestionable hits of all time (at most five) and see what ratings they got to calibrate our cut-off rating.AshishGtalk21:53, June 12, 2008 (UTC).
My experience, after years online, is that you can't get TWO people, much less more than two, to agree on a ranking of films in order of merit. As for using IMDB -- I just ran a power search on the top 100 films of 2005, ranked by ratings. Films that sank without a trace, that had neither box office nor critical successes, were getting rankings of 10, and the highest ranking films by receipts, per IBOS, weren't even in the top 100. IMDB is no good. I checked the Netflix rankings too -- a lot of junk films have four stars!
Would people agree to taking the BEST lists from the three sites that I linked, Upperstall, Greencine, and Bollywhat, and merging them? Take a look at those sites and their lists and see what you think.
In the meantime, I'm going to continue working through the IBOS figures. Perhaps we could have two lists for each year: the most popular AND the highest ranked per those three sites. Zora 01:04, 22 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] OK, two lists for each year or decade

Editors have been adding their favorite films here and there, so I got ruthless and set up two categores: top-grossing and critically acclaimed. Top-grossing is per IBOS (which seems to be down now, but I expect it will be up again soon). Critically-acclaimed I'm working on: I'm merging the Upperstall, Bollywhat, Greencine lists, and the zulm.net top 100. If it's on any of those lists, and it isn't already on the top-grossing list, it goes into critically acclaimed. I hope that's OK. Otherwise we're going to have a list of "Random-selected editors and their personal faves", which isn't going to do anyone any good.

I think the answer to "My favorite film isn't there" would be to find an online list, at some reputable site, that does include the film, and then we link the list at the bottom. Whether or not we include all the films on the list with the same status as Upperstall, Bollywhat, and Greencine can then be put up for discussion.

Does that seem workable to the editors here? Zora 21:31, 15 April 2006 (UTC)

Sounds good. That unfortunately doesn't solve the problem of an unbalanced list which mainly has new movies. GizzaChat © 08:26, 23 April 2006 (UTC)
No, it doesn't. I've bogged down on my "critically-acclaimed" list. And, to make this worse, IBOS, on which I was relying for box-office stats, is gone. Do you know of any site or publication that could replace it? Zora 08:29, 23 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] One more list?

India's official entry for foreign film nominee was Paheli and it isn't on the list. If it was chosen then it surely has to be notable enough? GizzaChat © 08:30, 23 April 2006 (UTC)

Yes, it might be good to have lists of Foreign Film nominees (as dismal as some of them were) and a link to the Filmfare Best Picture awards? Zora 10:20, 23 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Massive copyediting

DaGizza, if it was your prose I was dissecting, I'm sorry, but ... long synopses belong in the article for the film, not here. Judgements about the value of the film, the performances, how funny it is -- they don't belong here. Other people can make different judgments. I also removed all the accusations of plagiarism. Again, those belong in the articles IF they can be referenced to at least one critic saying that they are plagiarism. Otherwise it's original research. I mean, I know Akele Hum Akele Tum is based on Kramer vs. Kramer -- but unless I find a critic who says that, it's OR.

If I sound curt, sorry. I'm very tired and I have a lot more work to do on a book I'm editing. Zora 03:37, 24 April 2006 (UTC)

It's alright, most of the films that you copyedited were not added by me anyway! I was thinking of shortening some of the plots, such as Aradhana. It's good that you were bold enough to do it. I think a general guideline should be no more than 2 sentences of info per movie. GizzaChat © 04:26, 24 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Additions

The following movies are common to both Upperstall and Bollywhat, and not on the Wiki list

Looking to add them to the list unless someone has issues with any of the movies ( This lot has three Bimal Roy movies, but then he was a great).

[edit] Criteria ?

I am still not sure about the criteria on how the movies are decided to be part of this page? Is there a guideline? I have an idea.. we can vote for each movie.. and top n movies for each year can be chosen to be shown on the page..--Anshuk 00:01, 10 June 2006 (UTC)

Anshuk currently we are looking at lists on reputed sites like upperstall ( two other sites are mentioned on the article). If you have any more sites it would be great as these sites lists do have limitations. Voting can be "influnenced" and unless we have a large representative population voting we might not get the right films. Haphar 14:03, 12 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Non-Commercial Links

I'd added some links previously to a couple of different organizations offering Bollywood style dance classes. It wasn't for commercial purposes, but rather to illustrate the point that Bollywood films and the trademark songs & dances are becoming very much a part of mainstream pop culture outside of South Asia.

a simple web search will turn over so many different options for fans who seek to learn the style of Bollywood dancing, or who are just enthusiastic about the song and dance sequences. I felt it was a great addition to the wiki, elaborating that Bollywood is no longer an underground or cult phenomena in the west, but is trending into a large wave, both in music and movies, and western pop culture. For example, the upcoming launch of the broadway show "Bombay Dreams" on tour in the US...

There are some wonderful resources available, and these sites don't just stop at dance classes, they are full of lots of information about the genre and style:

Bollywood West[2] Bollywood Axion[3] Mango Dance[4] India Community Center[5] London Dance[6] Diva Dance[7] Dhoonya Dance[8] Blue 13 Dance co.[9]

Wikipedia being a resource, I feel it would be remiss not to help direct readers and researchers to further exploration of the topic.

[edit] Too many Rajesh Khanna films?

People have been adding older films, which is good, but some of them seem to be there because they star Rajesh Khanna, not because they're especially famous. I haven't seen most of these films, and I'm not at all sure of myself here, but I have a suspicion that these films may not be the most celebrated of their time. Comments? Zora 08:18, 27 September 2006 (UTC)

The additions to the list was based on the criteria that was discussed on the talk page here.
There are a total of 7 Khanna films in the list- Anand, Daag, Suchaa Jhuta, Kati Patang, Aradhna, Do Raaste and Khamoshi. You will find them in the website list agreed to here :-[mentioned.http://www.bollywhat.com/top100.html] and a boxoffice website [10]. In fact films like Haathi Mere Saathi, Dushman, Prem Nagar, Mere Jeevan Saathi, Safar and Aap Ki Kasam and Namak Haraam. ( some of them having a mention in the links above)are not on the wiki list.
Of these films 2 were not huge commercial hits (Commercially Anand and Khamoshi would have been bettered by Haathi Mere Saathi and Dushman) but the two were also critically acclaimed.

Rajesh Khanna was the top dog from about 1969 to 1975, of some 30 films of that period listed here we have 7 from the then top star. Which i feel is represntative of the times. If someone differs and has data to back up their claims we can discuss. "Incidentally I am not just batting for just Khanna films but 99% of films listed from the 40's to the 70's. These are genuine hits, more should be there but these are very representative. And are in the lists given. Haphar 10:43, 27 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Recent title change

Pegship changed the title of the article without consulting anyone here. I've left an enquiry on her talk page as to why she did this. The new title is misleading, because we've got critically acclaimed as well as top-grossing films. She seems to be a high mucky-muck in the overall film project, but I think she made a mistake in this case. Zora 02:00, 5 October 2006 (UTC)

I am neither high nor a mucky-muck. I'm nobody in particular and I only offer opinions. Please assume good faith; as I explained on your talk page, I thought the title was more accurate, I make mistake like everyone else on Wikipedia, and if it's misleading, for goodness' sake revert it, don't start picking on me for it. Her Pegship 03:22, 5 October 2006 (UTC)
Look, I even did it for you. Her Pegship 03:25, 5 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] References

Perhaps it would help keep this page in order if we required references -- a list of top-grossing films for the box office hits, and a link to a review for the critically acclaimed movies. For the older ones, a link to a respectable list, like the ones at Upperstall or Greencine, might do. Comments? 19:28, 12 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Copyedit of Vivah - problems with 2006 list

Someone added Vivah to the 2006 list and I removed it, on the grounds that the entry read like a press release and the film wasn't a hit. I was wrong on the latter count -- I've read since that even though the critics panned it, the audiences liked it. So when Hariharan added it again, I limited myself to copyediting the entry.

We do have a problem with 2006 -- I think we had agreed that it would be the five top-grossing films of each year, and there are, what, seven? films there now. The 2006 box office top five aren't posted at BoxOfficeIndia yet, but when they are, we need to prune the extra two films.

BoxOfficeIndia has a long list of the top-grossing five films of each year since 1940 [11] and we really really need to make sure all those moves are on our list, and that BOI is properly credited. Then we need to make sure that all those movies have articles. Zora 19:04, 6 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Water

Is this movie a Canadian movie, now that it has been nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film from Canada? Or can we add it as another critically acclaimed film?

[edit] What?!

Is it me, or do the main article page and talk page have different names? I think the talk page is called "Talk:List of popular Hindi films" but main page is called "List_of_top_Bollywood_films". This needs to be fixed. And I've noticed that the page still has a 2000's bias, something which will probably never go because of the numbers of films created now compared to a generation ago. It is shame. GizzaChat © 00:56, 25 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Top films of 2007?

Box Office India doesn't have any results yet, but according to Rediff, Salaam-e-Ishq is doing poorly as the box office, and Guru has been performing only so-so. Without any data, there's no reason to add any films. I don't think that there have been any 2007 hits so far. Zora 07:19, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

Guru has done well, but one can wait as confirmation would be available in some media report soon. Haphar 07:51, 12 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Addition of a few films

User: Shshshsh has added Mission Kashmir, Salaam Namaste and various other movies which are not included in the top hits section of [12]. This user is playing with names. He or she is favouring Preity Zinta even in special appearances with Krrish. I am sorry but this page is not supposed to favor actors. The film page shows who is making a special appearance. This page strictly talks about hits and a short summary of the film with the main actors. Please stop favoritism. niptuck123 17:11, 2 July 2007 (UTC)

No. This user User:niptuck123 is favouring Rani Mukerji. According to this site - BoxOfficeIndia.com, Salaam Namaste was a top grosser, while Black wasn't. Black was just an acclaimed project. Mission Kashmir was the third highest grossing film in 2000, while Badal was the sixth. So please stop vandalism. I also think I know you, but I will mantain silence for now. --ShahidTalk2me 09:18, 4 July 2007 (UTC)
The original idea of this page is to put each years top 5 commercial hits and top 5 critically acclaimed films. So as long as films qualify on that account they can be put up. Haphar 07:32, 20 September 2007 (UTC)
