[edit] Ashford

Anybody know why there is an entry for Ashford in this list. And if so where it is?.

According to my Phillips Gazeteer of Britain, there are plenty of places called Ashford, but none of them are in Berkshire. There is a village or hamlet called 'Ashford Hill' just over the border in Hampshire, and judging by one or two googled web pages, it looks like postal addresses in that place take the form 'xyz, Ashford Hill, Thatcham, Berkshire'; but that of course is saying that Thatcham is in Berkshire, not Ashford Hill. -- Chris j wood 18:54, 3 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Hello Chris - About time I said hello. Looking back at the page history, I think both these 'towns' must have been / were included during my edits. I was attempting to add current Berkshire placenames to this list, although I have been adding historical Berkshire placenames, e.g. Abingdon, etc., to the Berkshire category. (e.g. Slough appears as both category Buckinghamshire and Berkshire). Most of my sources were online gazeteers, e.g. Streetmap, the Internet generally and the Berkshire Atlas - out of reach at the moment. Looking again, I agree with you that these towns should not be present on a list of current placenames, and would not object if you removed them. I found a New Ashford in Berkshire County, USA, but would have spotted this and I don't think this was my source. Thanks for your diligence in this editing, Ian Cairns 19:18, 3 Oct 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Aston Tirrold

The only Aston Tirrold I can find references to is in Oxfordshire, although probably it was in Berkshire pre-1972. However this page seems only to list current places (ie. it doesn't list the pre-1972 county town of Abingdon). Any ideas why it is here?. -- Chris j wood 18:54, 3 Oct 2004 (UTC)

See above comments. Ian Cairns 19:18, 3 Oct 2004 (UTC)

[edit] template

Please add this template to all villages/towns/cities:

I have been adding it to as many as possible, but as only ~5% of the pages have actually been made it is too big a task for me to do all of them.

please link to the 2001 census in 'external links' thanks

I like what they've done over at List of places on the Isle of Wight, which contains places of interest as well as settlements. Also, instead of ordering it by A->Z, perhaps ordering it by districts and then 'towns'/'villages', anybody object if I do that? -- Joolz 19:22, 21 Mar 2005 (UTC)

No problem with adding places of interest. I do have something of an issue with not ordering A->Z, as I don't think most users know what district many places are in, and so non-alphabetic ordering makes the list harder to use. If we want to list places in districts, I suggest that we do that in a separate parrallel set of list articles. -- Chris j wood 19:33, 21 Mar 2005 (UTC)
