Also, Jagadish Chandra Bose should be included in the "Scientists" section. Please check this and other sites on him: http://web.mit.edu/varun_ag/www/bose.html

Simply because this article lists people from *West Bengal*, and Jagadish Chandra Bose was from *East Bengal*. Quoting from Jagdish Chandra Bose
'Bose was born in Mymensingh in Bengal (now in Bangladesh) on November 30, 1858. His father, Bhagawan Chandra Bose worked as a tax collector for the British East India Company. His family originally hailed from the village Rarikhal, Bikrampur, in the current day Dhaka District of Bangladesh.

by that criteria, almost half the people on that list should be excluded. I think we're treading on fine ground here if we exclude BENGALIS from either list. if they are Bengalis and lived and worked in the [Pre-Independence] Province of Bengal, IMO they should be in both lists -- Bangladesh and West Bengal. also, by that criteria, there is no logic in including Jhumpa Lahiri in the "West Bengal" list. she was not born in India/West Bengal, neither did she grow up there. so if you include JL in it, you need to include JCB. Indranee 01:04, 15 June 2006 (UTC)

I had placed the same argument in Talk:Rabindranath Tagore, but an overwhelming consensus was that birthplace is the main criteria. (see the discussion about categories there ... I was specifically told by the majority that birthplace is the sole and foremost criterion, that a person has lived a significant part of life is secondary, as happened with Tagore and East Bengal).
Specially for this article, it says List of people from West Bengal. I've cleaned up the Freedom fighters section which contained people from East Bengal by mistake. The current people listed in this page are born in West Bengal. If someone is not, that person is not supposed to be in this particular page. I suggest you create a List of Bengalis page, which can contain all Bengali people. I also suggest removing Jhumpa Lahiri ... she is not even born in India. She is definitely a Bengali, but list of people from X can only include people actually "from" X. --Ragib 01:16, 15 June 2006 (UTC)

okay, I understand your situation now. will go look at that other page where the discussion took place. it's not just JL though, there are a ton of other names on this page of people who were not born even in Bengal, like Anita Desai et al. I guess it's a work in progress, though I still think it's a bit of "chul-chera bichaar" ;) as to the birthplace, especially if the person was a bengali, was born in pre-independence PROVINCE of Bengal, and lived and worked therein. as to Jhumpa Lahiri, I suspect people want to include her because of the pulitzer fame ('cos hey it looks good for the list!) but by that criteria (birthplace), she shouldn't be included. thanks for the discussion. have a nice night. :) Indranee 01:26, 15 June 2006 (UTC)

I have removed Anita Desai (not sure about Kiran Desai's birthplace), and Baichung Bhutia. still investigating some of the others. but I still have doubts about this criteria. thanks. Indranee 01:32, 15 June 2006 (UTC)

Please justify why the following people are listed in this article:

  • Upamanyu Chatterjee, born in 1959, at Patna, Bihar.
  • Kishore Kumar was born in a Bengali family as Abhas Kumar Ganguly, in the small town of Khandwa of Madhya Pradesh.
  • Rohan Gavaskar(born February 20, 1976 in Uttar Pradesh) is a cricket player and the son of former Indian batting legend Sunil Gavaskar. He is a specialist middle-order left-handed batsman and a part-time left-arm-orthodox spin bowler.
  • Saba Karim(born November 14, 1967 in Patna) is an Indian cricketer. He is a right-handed batsman and a wicketkeeper.

I think the scope of the article doesn't allow people not "from" west bengal to be included. Thanks. --Ragib 05:46, 28 August 2006 (UTC)


I request Chakrarana  (talk · contribs) to stop cut pasting a list of Bengali poets and artists into the article, without ever verifying whether the persons are actually from West Bengal. For example, it doesn't take more than a few seconds to check where Taslima Nasrin is from. Similarly, Ritwik Ghatak, Utpal Dutt, Nabinchandra Sen were all East Bengalis. Don't you guys think more important is the language than the birthplace? If someone can't speak read or write Bengali, even then only on the basis of birthplace or bloodline can someone be considered as Bengali? I think this two critera should come into effect only when we are not sure if the person in context doesn't know "Bangla".
