[edit] General Information

This list of museums in the state was separated from List of museums in the United States on January 07, 2008. Please see List of museums in the United States for all history prior to that date.

Feel free to include Template:Infobox Museum when adding or editing articles on individual museums. Noroton (talk) 02:10, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Inclusion criteria

In February 2008 at Talk:List of museums in the United States, a consensus was reached on this statement on what kind of institutions to include on state museum-list articles:

Historic houses or halls of fame may be listed if they function as or include public museums -- see Biltmore Estate, Plumb House, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and Baseball Hall of Fame for examples. Art galleries that function primarily to sell art should not be listed, but public art museums that use "gallery" as part of their name may be listed. Nature centers and botanical gardens may be listed only if they contain historical or educational exhibits in a museum format.

Also inappropriate for this list are planetariums, aquaria and zoos, which have their own lists. Please follow these criteria when considering additional items for this list, or suggest changes at Talk:List of museums in the United States. Keep in mind there are lists for institutions similar to museums, as noted in the See also section of this article. Noroton (talk) 02:10, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Historical house museums and other history museums in New York

Hi, i am just finding my way to your List of museums in New York for the first time. I see there is a link to List of National Historic Landmarks in New York already, which is a list-article i have been working on. I see that some but not all of the historic house museums i know of in New York are on your list.

I would be happy to add some, but wonder about appropriate categories to tag the articles with. At world-level museum categories seem to be split by type, into Category: art museums and galleries, vs. other types of museums. I would like to have use of a new category like Category: History museums in New York, vs. a Category: Art museums and galleries in New York. That does not exist now, right?

One reason is that I would like to be able to link to a list of History museums in New York, from a new article Historic preservation in New York. Comments? doncram (talk) 00:22, 17 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Regions need improvement

The sortable categories is a great idea. However, the regions indicated are frequently incorrect or vague. I would propose correcting them and adding further regions, such as:

St. Lawrence Valley, Mohawk Valley, Southern Tier, North Country

How about using the New York State's official 11 tourism regions? See http://www.iloveny.com/MapsRegions/OurRegions.aspx. That is a MECE, objective breakdown of the state, and museums are part of tourism, so it seems appropriate. Each region has a highway map in PDF form available for downloading, such as http://iloveny.com/_files/map_region_fl.pdf for the Finger Lakes region, so it is possible to exactly determine which region each museum is in. doncram (talk) 03:07, 29 May 2008 (UTC)
