[edit] Research Projects

If you would be so kind as to find out what a "dolon" is, and add it to this list if it fits, that would be great. It's evidently an ancient Roman weapon, but when I look on Google, I keep getting the mythological character and the town. The reference to it is at Swordstick. Thank you. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 204.95.23.122 (talk • contribs) 06:42, 3 December 2006 (UTC).

Me again. I've got two more weapons--the suntetsu and the koppo. Again, if anyone knows anything about these . . .65.172.233.90 22:51, 17 December 2006 (UTC)

And while you're at it, Aklys has not been added to the list because its page says it's fictional, but one person on the talk page says it's actually a real weapon. If somebody would research this, and it's real, we could add it to the list.

[edit] Possible removal of weapons?

The "Pole weapons" section is getting a little fat. Since many of these are spears and can be found on the "Spears" page, maybe we should remove those and leave the others.

Any thoughts? I am not the only person who reads this page, right?

Only to keep the dead links out. I also think the whole list needs some trimming but I don't know where to start (besides the dead links of course).Peter Rehse 01:08, 18 December 2006 (UTC)

I'm still not sure how we could trim it without either eliminating valuable stuff or eliminating repeats from other pages. No insult, but would you mind giving some idea of what I should do instead of getting rid of those spears (or swords, or knives, or bashing weapons?)

[edit] Hey, who deleted the links to longer lists and categories?

With all due respect, we kinda need them (there are more than a hundred and twenty spears, and I haven't even counted the number of swords.) I put them back for now. If you get rid of them again, please post your reasoning here (if it makes sense, I'll listen.)

I did, explaining most of them in the edit explanation, as they were removed. I removed a series of pithy (and hence contentious statements). Something of a joke is an opinion - true or not is besides the point. Telling some one not to add shoe - besides being obvious sure enough someone added shoe. Things like Sword see Swords are redundant, and the comment at the top (well that is fair enough but try a rewrite that is a little less conversational.Peter Rehse 01:40, 28 December 2006 (UTC)

By the way I agree with your general point - the list seems to be adding everything and anything and needs to get trimmed down and more focused. I see the same problem with Martial arts weapons (which is including historical weapons). I'll change things slowly so that it can easily be reverted. By the way - you should get an account and sign your posts - easier to tell who says what.Peter Rehse 02:07, 28 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Improvised Weapons

Should this section actually be included? To me, this page should be a list of weapons created with the intention of being just that. I don't see why a section including things such as chainsaws, baseball bats and the like, should be here. While these things can most certainly be used as weapons in an improvised fashion, are they truly melee weapons? Atombomb93 04:06, 17 March 2007 (UTC)

Some of them are, definitely, such as the mattock. I guess I do see your point about stuff like the crowbar, though. Plus there's the fact that people tend to add weird stuff like Trolley pole to sublists like that. Feo takahari 22:41, 25 March 2007 (UTC)

I just added flashlight to the list. It links to the Maglite page, where it details the item's use as a baton in notorious police brutality cases. I also added the carabiner. The reason that they are often not allowed into venues such as stadiums and concerts is that they can be slipped over the hands like a pair of brass knuckles. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.23.224.5 (talk) 15:41, 23 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Please Stop Adding Stave

It's an old-fashioned term for Staff, which is already on this list. Besides, the link for Stave goes to a page about musical notation. Feo takahari 22:41, 25 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Move Javelin

Javelins are used for throwing. And thus qualify as ranged weapons. Exec. Tassadar (comments, contribs) 13:50, 8 March 2008 (UTC)
